@VirginiaGMA wrote:I got the email too and agree that this is terrible timing. I have two in college and can't understand why PayPal would address this so coldly as via email to loyal, long term customers like myself. There is nothing on the Pay Pal site and no other coverage about this decision, simply an email received with no explanation. So many times , over the years, this card was a life saver and I was able to assist my children and grandchildren who were stranded without gas money or lunch money or other personal needs and it was a great tool to help teach them about managing money and budgeting. I also used it for gift giving and to help with incidental college related costs. Why, right at the start of the new school year, would PayPal do this with no warning or explanation, and to use email as the way to communicate such an important change? . Some of my kiddos used this card for their ITunes accounts or to fund other small recurring costs which require the user to link a debit or credit card. This is more than an inconvenience and I am disappointed not only with the decision, but also with the way it was handled. There is one other option I know of, called the VISA BUXX card, but there are fewer funding options with that card and less flexibility and more fees. Shame on you PayPal for how you handled this.
The best way to help them is to tell them to manage their finance prudently so they dont get trapped in a situation-no gas,no money.
If they are old enough for college,to drive,to talk back, tell them to start behaving like mature adults, sooner or later they have to learn, why not now.
let them open their own bank account, you don have to micro manage,if they blow the budget,it is their **bleep** which should suffer, you dont need to wipe their **bleep** for them, they will thank you later in life

It is true! Set up a bank account with a debit card for your son and use squarecash instead.

I also got this mail. There's nothing obviously bad about the mail itself (no malicious code that I can see), but there's no way to verify its authenticity.
The reasonable thing to for a user to do is to log into the site (not using any link provided in the mail), where one would expect to find a banner, popup, or other site notice (at least on the student account pages) mirroring what was sent in the email. No such
notice-- on www.paypal.com it seems to be all business as usual, which means the email could easily be a forgery. I can see this going either way:
* "Yes, we terminated our relationship with the bank servicing our Student Debit MasterCard product. We have not yet updated the web site indicating this. We're sorry for the inconvenience, short notice, and poor communication."
* "No, we have no plans to terminate that program at this time; any mail you received was fraudulent."

When I log on one of my daughter's accounts says it has an issue in the "resolution center". When I go to that area there is a little red flag on her account indicating that there is some issue. But then there is no issue listed. Awful interface. An e-mail to PayPal has not been responded to either.
She did receive an e-mail saying her account was frozen, but no indication why.
PayPal, is anyone paying attention? Hello? Please clarify what is going on, or if this is legitimate.

I just got off the phone with PayPal. Turns out that because my daughter is over 18, that's the reason the resolution center says there is an issue, but it doesn't tell me what the issue is. They said that because she is over 18 she can have her own account. That's all fine and good, but the best feature of these student cards was that I could track their spending.
In any case, thanks PayPal for wasting a bunch of my time!
And she did confirm that they are indeed shutting down the PayPal student accounts. They are handling this very poorly IMO.
I'm going to look into other solutions like the Square Pay thing other posters have mentioned. If anybody has any other suggestions, thanks in advance for sharing them.

When I sign in to my Student account at the top it says " Think you’ve received a fake email? Forward it to spoof@paypal.com and we’ll review it."
So I sent it in hoping for a reply. I would send yours in too!
