Refund to unknown credit card

I went into a store to make a return of an online purchase I made with PayPal. The refund was going to an unknown credit card. It was going to a Discover card and I have only ever had a single Visa. The cashier told me it was an issue on PayPal end, not theirs. I saw another post like this that had a generic "solution" that did not answer their question. Why would this happen?

I'm sorry to hear your refund sounds like it's going to an incorrect card. All refunds should automatically return to your original payment method. I recommend contact Customer Support for assistance investigating this matter.  You can reach Customer Support by clicking 'Contact' at the bottom of any PayPal website. Support is also available through Facebook Private Message or Twitter Direct Message.
