I had $980 taken from my bank account without my knowledge or consent. This led to a $45 NSF fee and me having to move money from a credit line to cover while I sort this out. When I inquired I was told that it was due to auto reload being set up. How did this get set up without my knowledge, I have been with paypal since 2009 and it has never happened before. How do I turn it off? And will paypal reimburse me for the money I'm loosing through this?

Automatic payments, billing agreements, subscriptions, recurring payments, etc are usually set up on the very first purchase with the merchant. Read the checkout screens carefully for any hyper linked terms & conditions, the next time you pay for something.

Automatic payments, billing agreements, subscriptions may be deactivated from your automatic payments settings.

These types of payments are difficult to dispute because of the billing agreement/pre-authorization. Try contacting the merchant to request a refund or ask PayPal to do a deeper review if you do not recall making this purchase to begin with. Also beware of free trials that require you to provide a payment method. They typically charge you if you forget to cancel.

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂

It is not a payment to a merchant that I have set up. Its PayPal adding funds to my online PayPal account from my bank account without my consent. There is no outside party.

Hi @KaylaMiddaugh and welcome,

@sharpiemarker thank you for your response as that would have been my first thoughts too.

@KaylaMiddaugh, you mention in your response that this was a payment requested from your bank to add funds to your PayPal account. Are you now seeing these funds added to your PayPal balance? If so you will have the option to withdraw them back to your bank account. PayPal is a user initiated system so someone would of had to request these funds to be added from your bank.  We can of course process the payment but someone that is logged in to the account must initiate the transaction. Is it possible that it was done in error or that anyone else has access to your PayPal account? I would recommend to change your password just in case on your account and the email account that you use for PayPal. Just be sure to keep them different.

I hope this helps,

Paula

Hi Paula,

It turns out that my account was accessed by an outside party without my knowledge or consent. An additional email and phone number were also added to my account. We have changed passwords to my account and my email, eliminated the additional email and number, and the funds are currently being sent back to my account.

Hi @KaylaMiddaugh

Thank you so much for the update. I am sorry to hear that your account was accessed but glad to hear the funds are on their way back to you. It sounds like you have taken all the necessary precautions which is good. Just be sure to always keep your password for PayPal different from any other password 🙂

@Courtneyll I do regret to hear that this has happened to you. When your account is being reviewed and the transaction are being investigated, we will look for any unauthorized access or activity. There are times when we are unable to find anything which is why a claim would be denied. You do have the option to have it reviewed again as we are all human and something might have been missed. If you contact us directly via the help and contact link we can offer further assistance.

Please feel free to keep us updated as it may help other users,

Thanks

Paula
