Hello @CarinaH @Jokebob215,
Welcome to our community forum and thank you for your posts!
I apologize for the negative experience that you have had with us and it's not something we want our customers to have. Unfortunately, Friends & Family payments are not covered under PayPal Purchase Protection. To avoid such issues in the future and to avail of PayPal's purchase protection, always send your payment as Goods & Service (instead of friends & Family). So if you have any issue with the transaction, you can dispute it with us and we can help you with a refund if eligible.
Further, our internal system will always reviews every account and if there's any issue found, we will take necessary actions towards the account.
I hope this information helps! Have a great day!
Bindu

Hi Paypal_Bindu,
thank you for your reply. Even though I appreciate it, your basically repeating what your colleagues in support told me. I get that, and I have learned from that experience. I know I won't get my money back. What bothers me much more is that Paypal does not do anything to help prevent fraud by closing the recipients account. I checked www.tthme.com again and the Paypal payment option is still possible and working. Not taking any action is inacceptable. I am contacting the German consumer protection agency.

They can't take action against someone if you sent them a friends/family payment.
You basically sent them a 'gift' of money and paypal can't force them to pay a 'gift' back again.
If they are accepting payments via a personal paypal.me link then its up to you to tick the goods/services box to make it a goods/services transaction.
Advice is voluntary.
Kudos / Solution appreciated.

Hi @ronoldadams, @Jokebob215, and everyone,
I am sorry to hear of the experiences that you have had with payments sent as Friends and Family payments instead of Goods and Services payments.
PayPal is unable to differentiate the difference in a payment type unless the sender selects it. Payments between friends/family that are not meant for the exchange of goods or services do not charge fees to the recipient, and also do not have protection available. Payments sent by Goods and Services option carry protection, and it is vital that they are marked as such for that protection to apply. It's very unfortunate that the payments were not made in a way that enables the protection afforded by the Buyer Protection program.

Hi Jokebob215,
sorry to hear that you have had a similar bad experience. Since Paypal obviously does not care, I am contacting the German consumer protection agency (I am from Germany).
