Getting a deposit refunded for service not received from a contractor

Hi Guys,

We recently paid a deposit of $700 for a contractor to come and re-level our mobile home. Total cost of the job was to be $1400, so the deposit was 50%.

He was supposed to start on Thursday 20 October but when I text him on the day said he couldnt make it but would definately come on Saturday 22 October.

Saturday came and by mid afternoon I again had to text to see where he was, he said he couldn't make it as he forgot he had another job that day! but would come Sunday 23 if he could get a sitter for his kids, but if we were ok with it he could bring them along. We said we were fine with the kids as we have our own that could entertain his.

And again, he hadn't arrived Sunday so I once again texted to see where he was, he said he didn't think he would make it but he said he'd definately come today, Monday 24.

So, of course he didn't come today either. So I had to text to see where he was, he said it was raining so he wasn't coming.

When he said he wasn't coming today, I asked him to refund our deposit as he didn't seem interested in doing the work; to which he replied he would still do it. I said that we had lost all confidence in him as he had not contacted me once to say that he wasn't coming on any of the days that he said he would; I was always the one chasing him on the day when he didn't turn up.

I again asked him for a refund of our deposit and he is now not replying to my texts.

Please can someone help us with what to do now, can we get a refund through paypal if he choses not to respond or refund us? Just trying to see what options we have in these circumstances as we neeeded our home relevelling as soon as possible and now we dont have the money to pay another contractor.

Thank you,

Gary & Gina

Hi @GazzaT0808,

Thank you for your post, and welcome to the Community! I'm sorry to hear that the contractor you retained has not yet conducted the work.

To learn more about Buyer Protection, please take a look here and in more detail in the User Agreement, which can also be found by clicking Legal at the bottom of the PayPal website.

You can open a dispute for Item or Service Not Received.

I hope this is resolved quickly for you. I know what it's like to wait for a contactor and not have the work completed. It's more than frustrating!

Olivia
