"This card cannot be used for this transaction"

When trying to buy an item from ebay (UK) I enter my paypal details and confirm payment and this error shows:

"This card cannot be used for this transaction. You can complete the checkout with another debit or credit card. Please enter your new card information below."

My paypal is linked with my Bank of Scotland student account and my visa debit card.

I have verified my card and bank on paypal.

Any idea how to solve this, It has happened 3 times to me on ebay.

Update: Phoned my bank and it seems that all the transactions from paypal are going through and the bank accepts the requests but paypal are not completing the transaction.


Now it would mean I am going to have to phone paypal, but I hear they're call centre is useless.

Hi Guys,

Generally you will only receive this message if your card issuer denies our request to verify your card. When you initiate a payment using your debit or credit card we send an instant authorisation to your card issuer. If your card issuer denies the authorisation you will receive a message saying " you can not use this card for this transaction, please add another card".

I would suggest that when you receive this message that  you contact the online authorisation department at your issuing bank as it may be their internal security system blocking the transaction.

We have recently changed our website procedure and now find that people, anyone & everyone, from around the world when buying and using a valid credit card are presented with, 'The card you entered cannot be used for this payment. Please enter a different credit or debit card number’; that includes my own personal Visa credit card. 

All the replies, including yours Paula, blame the user, this incorrect. Debit Cards work fine,

Is there something in 'My Business Setup' that needs initialising from our end; we have not had a credit card payment in 5 years.

Trying to find replies to previous posts is an unmastered challenge. How will one find the reply to this post?

Now that is a challenge for Paypal. This post comes from an exceedingly frustrated business user, please try to excel an become user friendly.

I have the same message.  I'm not a student and have a healthy bank acount and yet that's all the info I get so I put in another card and that doesn't work either.  I rarely use ebay but I wish these traders would stop using PayPal cos I've had so many problems with it over the years as both a buyer and seller.  It really does my head in.

have you resolved this issue yet? as i am having the same problem, i just paid for an item on ebay, 2 minuets later tried to pay for somthing else and this message keeps popping up and wont let me pay!!
