Refund request

I have an open refund request from a guy I sold a knife to. The knife arrived with a small bend on the tip. As the knife has a lifetime unconditional warranty even if you are not the original buyer, Isuggested to the buyer that I pay both ways back to bark river for warranty repairs. He originnaly agreed, but after a while he decided he no longer wanted the knife and instead wanted a refund. I fully insured the knife but only in case it was lost because any issues would be fixed with the warranty. I suggested that at lease we should report it to USPS and fie a claim...no go...still wants refund. I feel that I stated my claim very well to Paypal and that they should rule on my side. His entire statement was that Item was not as advertised..arrived damages. Nothing else. My question is this: IF Paypal should rule in his favor and I have to refund his money, will he be required to send back my knife? As a sidenote...his original offer to settle was for him to keep the knife and I would refund him $180, half of the original sale price....and then he could get it fixed for free under warranty....DOH!

There might be an issue with prohibited activities, specifically "certain weapons or knives regulated under applicable law.'

Your policies and warranties are not relevant to PayPal policies.  Your own business ethics and philocosphy should help you resolve the problem.  PayPal wants seller to resolve issuess to the buyer does not need to file a dispute.  Consider your costs carefully as your business costs can increase if you will not settle with the buyer.  As the seller you are in full control to offer a settlement.   If you refund your fees will be reversed, except the $0.30.

When the buyer files a dispute for not as described and wins the buyer will need to pay return shipping for something, even if not the right item.  PayPal will then force a full refund, but not the fees.  You can appeal and then have the case drag on.

Needing to pay return may annoy the buyer so the buyer goes to the next step and files a dispute with credit card.  The credit card bank agrees with the buyer and gives the buyer a refund while allowing the buyer to keep the item.  You lose the item, give back the money, you still have the PayPal fees, and you get a $20 chargeback fee.

Make sure you understand the potential consequences when you make your choice as what to do.
