Does PayPal make charges on refunds?

Hi, I need some advice re Payapal charges on refunds.

I advertised and sold a cabinet for £36 but the buyer messed me about. He wouldn't pay by paypal telling me that he would pay on collection instead and then, after two weeks,  his driver claimed he couldn't find my village to make the collection.

Pigged off, I contacted the buyer and told him I was cancelling the sale and giving the item to charity. Which I did.

Then strangely, the buyer paid me the money by accident even thoguh we had canelled the sale. He then contacted me to ask me to refund the money.

I am happy to do so, but am concerned that this ridiculous situation is going to leave me out of pocket re: the Paypal charges. It's only £1.34 but there is a clear principle at stake here.

I cannot find anything on the website which explains what happens re: charges in the case of refunds.

Please can someone tell me what I need to do?

I'm confused.  Did you actually sell the cabinet for 36 or did the potential make a claim to buy?  If he did not make a payment, then there was no sale and no obligation to do anything with the item.

If a buyer later makes a payment you can simply refund through the same transactions.  Fess will be refunded except a single transaction fee of about 0.30.

You need to refund if there is no item to ship.

Are you in the UK? As you are talking in pounds sterling i guess you are which is why i said it was a 20p processing fee.

Thank you for all your help.

No, I cancelled the sale after the buyer's delivery man refused to come and collect the item from my village.

The buyer accidently still paid me via Paypal and wants his money back. I was just checking the situation re: fees.

Thanks again.

I had the exact same thing happen to me, a buyer failed to read the "pickup only" listing (on ebay) as well as my personalized ALL CAPS description stating there would be -- NO shipping.

Instead the buyer paid via PayPal and proceeded to turn right around and email me stating they did not realize this, but would be willing to pay for shipping. I informed them this was not possible (which is the reason I listed as I had) and that I would look into the proper method of refunding, (i.e. cancelling the sale on ebay which generated the refund via PayPal).

In the end while I was refunded my selling fees on ebay, there is no recourse with PayPal so I'm out the refund fee due to buyer error. I spent way too long on the phone with both eBay and PayPal just explaining the principle of my position neither of which would do anything because this senario apparently hasn't been considered by either company unfortunately.

I would have one-off it, but I've already had a similar instance in the past where my item was bought, but unpaid so no charges, but annoying still. If it happens again I just stop listing for pick up period.
