Exchange amount too high

I just booked an apartment on airbnb and the amount was 769.14$. According to PayPals exchange rate 1CHF = 0.9706 $. How come I paid CHF 792.45 at the end? I don't get it, if one USD is less than one CHF, how come I ended up paying more??? If it's PayPal fees why wasn't I informed before paying. I simply don't get it... Thanks for your help!

Hi @kirafilippova,

Welcome to the PayPal community! I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you have encountered. I understand that you have been charged more than the exchange rate. Have you checked the same with the merchant if there was an additional cost involved that you might have missed on fine-print? About currency conversion rates, you can find more information here: https://www.paypal.com/ch/smarthelp/article/faq1976

PayPal Fees - PayPal Fees Calculate | PayPal CH

We update our exchange rate twice a day to keep it up to date with the bank's rate. The total cost of international transactions made with PayPal is usually less than many international multi-currency bank transfers. Please note that you will always be shown the exchange rate before completing a transaction. To check our up-to-date exchange rates, please log in to your PayPal account and go to https://www.paypal.com/businesswallet/currencyConverter/CHF.

If you are unsure why you were charged more, I'd recommend reaching out to our Customer Support teams by clicking "Help & Contact" at the bottom of any PayPal page for further assistance.

Good luck!

- Ali

Hi Ali,

I see that you're sending always the same text, but.... the explanation is wrong.

PayPal made a mistake - in my case - between euro and dollar (wrong mentioned/calculated at the statement). You also can check this with using the online calculator. Nothing to do with extra costs etc only..... a big accountancy mistake from PayPal 😞

Best regards,

J.

Hello there,

There is a BIG accountancy problem at PayPal, they made a mistake in the conversion rate (not exchange rate) !!

I made printscreens (from their calculator and statement) but until now, the support doesn’t understand the issue 😞 😞 We also paid too much (and nooooo,  no additional costs).

UPDATE : we just got a call from the support. Finally someone who understood the problem. A file is open to solve the problem. I recommand to do the same.

Hello @Jurgen9200

Thank you for your message. I saw there was a mathematical problem, but I didn't think of swapping the exchange rates at that moment. But you are totally right. I couldn't find any real support numbers to call online so I decided to claim back the amount and right to the community. Now I might have an issue with the seller / airbnb, just because PayPal has a problem with it's exchange rates....

Best regards!

Hello @ali_3

Please read Jurgen 9200 reply concerning the exchange rates at PayPal. Your answer wasn't really a satisfying one. Please resolve the issue with airbnb - as I couldn't find any way to get to PayPal and reimburse the money. It had nothing to do with the seller / airbnb, but only with PayPal.

Thank you in advance.

@ali_3

Hi Ali,

your answer is aggressive…. 😞

Screenshots are added. Nothing to do with wrong exchange rate, nothing to do with additional fees, just a wrong accountancy/calculation problem by PP (see explanation to @kirafilippova).

AirB&B has nothing to do with it.

Lucky me I finally found a person from the support service who saw the problem and a case/file to solve the problem is open.

@kirafilippova

Indeed, an accountancy problem.

See my reply to @ali_3 . My advice: screenshot of the exchange rate from euro to dollar and from dollar to euro (their calculator under section wallet) and a screenshot from the PP statement. If they do understand accountancy, they must see the problem immediately…. but unfortunately it was not easy to find someone (only after different phone calls, messages via Twitter and Facebook).

I just added the printscreens and made a calculation from my case.

1dollar = 0,9172 euro (printscreen calculator PP dollar to euro)

I paid 1.961,02 dollar == in euro this should be 1.798,64 …. and look at the statement !
