problem with printing a shipping label & customs form

I am trying to use PayPal to print a shipping label for a package I'm sending to the UK, but I keep having a problem when I try to print the customs form.

This is a lot of 48 books with a value of $16.88. It's actually two separate auctions that the customer paid for together.

I have all the address information correct, and I've entered the customs information, and I keep getting the error message:

"The total value of the customs items can not be greater than $400.00 USD.The total weight of the customs items can not be greater than the specified package weight. Please either edit the item information or edit your shipment details."

The declared value of the items is nowhere near $400, and the weight on the customs form is less than the full package. (20 pounds on the customs form compared to 20 pounds 3 ounces on the shipping details page.)

A few minutes earlier I used PayPal to print another International Priority book lot to Canada, and it didn't give me any problems at all.

Could the fact that this is two orders combined be what's complicating things?

I tried filling out the customs form two different ways, but I get the same error message. I listed the items separately on two lines, calling them both "books" with two separate subtotals equaling 16.98. I also tried combining them into one line. Either way I get the same error message.

I know I can go to the Post Office and fill out the forms by hand, but I really wanted to use money directly from my PayPal account to pay for the shipping.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

I know this is an old post, but I am getting the exact same problem... also shipping to the UK, also multiple orders. I wonder if it is a glitch.

Hi ColeyClothing,

It looks like ssawyer77 was on the right track, identifying it as a problem because it's multiple orders. If you make both the international label and the customs form show two different orders, it should work.

I hope this helps!

I am also not able to complete and print customs forms. This is the 3rd one I tried: one was to an Air Force Base, one to Canada, and one to UK. They were only 1 package each. I also tried it at usps.com.  I would get the whole form filled out and then it would tell me to correct the following errors and fill in the required information. There was no more information to left enter. I just printed the information I had typed in.

I ended up going to the Post Office on the first one.

I have been snowed in since last week, so I called my local Post Office and told them the problem. They are letting me send a check and my partial customs form with my mailman.

Also, could not get the snail mail rate in order to print shipping label, only priority mail. The difference was $18!

We need to offer international shipping to increase our orders.

We should not have to go through all this to sell a few small items. What is wrong?

Yeah, sometimes when you have multiple items it gets tricky filling out those forms.

For example in the original post (OP), the seller had a declared value of $16.88 for 48 books and the reason the error message was saying "greater than $400.00" is because 48 books @ $16.88 each was entered so the system is calculating it like as: 48 x $16.88 = $810.24 which is "greater than $400.00".

What you want to do is divide $16.88 by 48 books = $0.35 per book with 8 cents left over.  So you would enter  47 books @ 35 cents each and 1 book @ $0.43 giving you the total declared value of $16.88.

Again, essentially you have to divide the declared value by your quantity until it equals down to the exact penny, the declared value you entered for your shipment.

Hope this helps.

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂

On a single item going to the US, I am getting the error message:

The total weight of the customs items cannot be greater than the specified package weight. Please either edit the item information or edit your postage details.

I edit the information, but no matter how I edit the item's postage weight, I just cannot print my label. The time I have wasted on this has meant that I will have no profit from this item whatsoever because I could've been making more jewellery in the time. I will just have to take it to the post office and let Royal Mail have the postage money without PayPal getting their cut. To say I am irritated would be severely underestimating how annoyed I am with this glitch.
