I sent someone money through PayPal a few months ago and I never disputed the transaction with PayPal or my bank, yet out of nowhere, PayPal opened a dispute case yesterday, claiming that the dispute was filed with my bank and that it is out of their hands. I never filed any dispute and my bank has no record of a dispute being filed on that transaction. The bank can't cancel the dispute case since in their system, there is no dispute case, yet PayPal claims they can't close the case because it was filed with the bank.
Has anyone experienced anything like that or does anyone have any idea what might be going on?

Hello @James22LL
Welcome to the PayPal Help Community and thanks for posting!
I understand your concern about the open dispute with your bank towards a payment sent using PayPal. Chargeback is when you report a transaction with your card or bank for a refund. The chargeback process is initiated outside of PayPal. To get the chargeback closed, I recommend you to review the details of the chargeback in the email you have received and check with your bank again with the chargeback ID. For any additional assistance, please reach out to PayPal Support team.
Hope this information helps,
Bindu

This answer doesn't really address the issue raised. If the person never filed a chargeback with their bank, why is PayPal opening a dispute case? I just had this happen to me and had an incredibly rude customer service agent essentially tell me that my bank is lying.

I recnetly had something similar happen to me. I decided to cancel an preorder that I made in July of 2022 in April of this year from a vendor that I have used for years. I got an email from Paypal saying they had refunded the money to my bank, but the money never showed up in my account. I then found two cases open in my PayPal account. One was for the NRD for the preorder the other for the remainder of the cost of the product. My vendor has locked my account and I can no longer access my existing preorders or order anything new unill these disputes are cleared by PayPal.
My bank never initiated any dispute on the refund. I did not initiate a dispute on the refund. The vendor did not issue a dispute on the refund. Yet, it is still there. I am told it will take a minimum of 60 days to process this. I have tried to contact PayPal, but all I get is a robot that can't help me with my problem. What do I do?
