Hi @Gumbyjones,
Thank you for your post and welcome to the PayPal Community Forum! I'm sorry to hear that you do not recognize a charge from a merchant in your PayPal account. That can be confusing, and I hope to help you with some insight into what may have happened.
One of the leading causes of unrecognized charges is that there may have been a free trial that you signed up for, which included agreeing to a subscription payment arrangement at a later time, if not canceled. Many times, people will forget that agreement and then they get charged later when they've since forgotten the free trial. To check to see if you have any subscriptions, automatic payments, or payment arrangements and cancel them, please take a look at this linked article.
There's always the possibility of unauthorized access, if a fraudster obtained your password from a less secure platform or from any security holes in a network or computer that you may have used to access your account. If you are certain that the first scenario is not the issue, you can follow these linked steps to open a dispute for an unauthorized payment. Note that such a case will only be effective if it is determined that you in fact did not set up the payment arrangement or individual payment.
I wish you the best of luck with getting to the bottom of things and getting resolution!
Olivia
