I just sold my laptop on gumtree and the buyer sent funds through PayPal but I am worried that all I don’t have any pending funds in my account. The emails I received state that I have to send the tracking number to PayPal and the funds will be credited to my account. Is this common practise?

Emails from PayPal will always address you by your first and last name or business name. If you're unsure of an email, don't click any links in the email, go to the website directly and log in to see if you have any transactions or notices in your account. If you don't see any any transactions, its safe to say that you didn't receive any funds.
