How do I prevent Paypal from automatically using up my balance, when I have specifically set my Visa card as my default payment?

When I receive money from friends and family, that money is specifically set aside for a specific purpose, and should not immediately be used upon my next transaction. I should be able to turn off any setting to use my balance first for all transactions.

Log in to Paypal, 

Go to your account settings by clicking the cog wheel,

Choose Payment,

Scroll down the page till the section "Your preferred way to pay"

ensure "Online Purchases" and "In Store Purchases" are both NOT set to use your balance.

This will avoid using your balance for any payment and will use the payment method you have set up.
