Hello, @Carolmacd. Thanks for taking the time to add your question here on the PayPal Community Forum.
For anything shipped via the US Postal Service, it would be necessary to get a tracking number from them when postage is purchased to be able to track a package. A PayPal transaction ID number would not register in their system.
Tracking numbers need to be obtained from a shipper (USPS, FedEx, DHL, UPS, etc.) and that information may be entered in the transaction details for a PayPal transaction. Doing that helps sellers deal with disputes, claims and chargebacks, and tracking is shared with buyers (via their own PayPal account) which is good since buyers like to know when to expect a shipment.
I hope this information is helpful. Thanks for being a part of the PayPal Community!
Sincerely,
Michael
