Had an item for sale on gumtree, buyer emailed through gumtree mail and said they were from down south and would like to buy the item ,I’m from Scotland, they said they would pay for the item and then arrange a courier to collect, have seen a few scams over the years but this person seemed more genuine than most I had seen around so went a bit further with the sale, supplied PayPal address and they said they would pay, received an email through gumtree mail that looked very like a PayPal email saying I had received the funds but had to click through a link to claim the money or I would lose it,have now stopped at this point as when receiving money in the past for items it went straight into the account and received an email from PayPal direct with a transaction receipt.
currently there are no funds in my account and the email claims I need to go through a link,is this a new scam going around or am I being overly cautious
thanks in advance

Do not click links in emails, especially not though Gumtree messaging because if I remember correctly, Gumtree recommends not accepting PayPal.
At the very least, check your email inbox for an official PayPal payment confirmation that says accept/claim money and even then you should log in to accept it and not have to click any links because that could set off a virus, malware or some kind of portal into your device from remote.
When you receive an authentic PayPal email to accept or claim funds, it is my understanding that a transaction record of the payment should appear in your PayPal account with also a button to accept/claim funds.
Your circumstances sounds iffy to me, I'd advise to not proceed.
Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂

Was very wary when asked to click links that come from third party’s ,that’s why I didn’t do it,must be a new scam which comes at you from a different angle as was partial sucked in to it as seemed relatively genuine, cheers for the advice
