Proof of SSN (Social Security Number) Required???

Hi everyone! I have a question about something as the title of this topic says: Should I provide proof of my SSN?

When I wanted to transfer money from my bank account to my PayPal account, PayPal says that I have to provide proof of my SSN in order to be able to make that transfer. But as I recall, I WAS ABLE to transfer money from my bank account to my PayPal account twice WITHOUT having to provide proof of my SSN. Also, when I signed up for a PayPal account, it didn't ask me for my SSN at all.

Here's the notice I've received everytime I log in:

PayPal is constantly working to ensure security by regularly screening the accounts in our system. We recently reviewed your account, and we need more information to help us provide you with secure service. We would like to return your account to regular standing as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Jun 23, 2012: We need some personal information about you or your PayPal account.

(Your case ID for this reason is PP-001-840-178-614.)

How can I return my account to regular standing?

 I don't know; this sounds really odd, awkward, and suspicious to me.

Does sound odd, I think for this one you need to phone paypal customer services.

Go to contact us bottom of paypal pages > put in account problems in the search and choose the phone option.

When you get through don't select any of the options just hang on till you get through to an agent.

Same here .. i cannot add money anymore and when i tried to resolve this issue they asked for a photo of my Social Sec. Card either sent by jpg file or by fax !! 

First .. i removed all my remaining funds from there. 

Then i sent them the following email: 

Ok, so you have my name, verified address, verified phone number, certified credit card number and certified bank account number, as well as my social security number and now you are telling me that you STILL cannot verify my identity and you need a picture of my SS card on top of everything else? How about i send you a blood sample while i am at it? You already have more information about me than the IRS!!! What the **bleep** is wrong with you Paypal?? 

Do you realize how ridiculous this sounds?? Is your request supposed to make me feel "safer"? 

Because Paypal really must really be totally incompetent when it comes to verifying identities if that's the case! 

Ever since this service was bought by eBay it has been going downhill, but Paypal just hit a new low!
