Transaction fees

This is probably going to sound pretty dumb to seasoned eBayers, but I was always under the impression there was only one set of fees for selling payable to eBay, and that was then deducted from the Paypal account. Having just sold a fairly high-value item, Paypal has already deducted a fee and there is a different figure showing in my eBay account to be deducted later in the month! Have I got my knickers in  a twist, or do sellers get hit twice - once for selling on eBay and then another transaction fee on Paypal?!!

I too have been stung by these hidden fees which are not shown up front. I've just sold my late fathers camera equipment on eBay and taken payment via paypal and it seems that eBay/paypal have between them taken 15-20% of the value of the goods. I don't think this is fair as the beneficiaries who were supposed to be receiving the mony from the sales have had their pockets picked by the corporate GreedBay. I could have sold the items for less hassle and more Money via classified ads, which is what I will do in future.

Am I correct in thinking that if my PayPal funds are drawn from my bank account instead of a credit card, I will avoid the PayPal fees? (Mine is a personal account)

Hi richbig,

Our fees are the same for all accounts. We charge fees when:

  • You receive money from a purchase
  • You receive payments from outside your country or region
  • You send personal payments using a credit card. The sender determines who pays the fee

Transaction fees can range from 1.4% to 3.4% + 20p. If you receive a payment from outside the UK, an additional cross-border fee of 0.5% may apply.

It's free to pay for a purchase, or make a personal transfer using money from your PayPal balance or your bank account. To view our fees further please click here

I hope this helps

This is totally disgraceful.

I have just sold a fridge and expected full payment minus ebay's extortionate fee.  Then I get hit with a 5% paypal fee!!!

Cost me 15% + listing fees just to sell something.

Paypal can swing - will soon be cancelling account and will recomend everyone I know does the same.

Do not tell me these chargfes always exosted as they did not - I have been using ebay and paypal for years.

Guys, as above, I am only here because this is the first time I too have actually seen these fees.  Paula, it is all very well saying that it is free to make a payment using PayPal - but not if the person receiving the money has to pay a fee.

Time to make a switch to GumTree or Freecycle.  I'd rather give the stuff away than pay 15% to eBay and PayPal and have the hassle of posting.

Greedbay and PinchPal, take too much money, I sold a heavy jacket and Ebay would not let me put the proper postage, so I had to invoice separately for an extra £4.00, this was pure postage and paypal took 34p from it, so I now have to pay 34p to post the item!!!!!

Complete rip off

I thought I there had been some sort of mistake and was about to raise my concern with Paypal. I've ended up receiving a fraction of the selling price, I'll certainly be looking  for alternative payment options now.

is that all?

I sold 2 relatively low value items @£17.24 and £17.50 including postage.

The Paypal fees were more for the cheaper sale item (both shipping charges were the same at £4 and both were to the UK)

I paid 84 p and 90p PAYPAL fees +ebay fees of £1.35 + listing fee of 0.25. they also rounded up the sale price when calculating their fees. In the end I paid EBAY/Paypal (one and the same) £5.20 to sell 2 items for £26 pounds thats 20% of total

I wouldn't normally complain - least not when PayPal were a seperate entity to eBay but now eBay OWN PayPal I expected the fees to be absorbed by the auction giant. I checked Amazon's fees earlier today and they are around the 14% mark so not much better. eBid or GumTree are the future I think!
