On Kijiji a Buyer has asked to pay by PayPal

I am brand new to PayPal.  I listed something on Kijiji (for over $1000) & a buyer surfaced within a day.  They said they would pay FULL price to my PayPal account.  ALSO that THEY would pay the charges.  (1) How do I tell them to pay me via PayPal from Kijiji (or my email).  (2)  How do I ensure THEY pay the charges as they have said, and (3)  Do you see any scam etc. problems?

I see a huge problem with taking someone's word that they will pay you.

First off, tell them the terms you agree to sell; get an email confirmation from them agreeing to the terms.  Secondly, wait until the funds have cleared paypal and are in your bank account before shipping or handing anything over to someone.  Only that way are you guaranteed that you will have your funds.

Comment: Be careful selling by PayPal and offering "Pick Up" of the item.

Background: A number of sellers (auto parts mostly) on Ebay offer "Pick Up" as a method of shipping but, they will only accept cash or credit card at the time of pick up, for payment.

The reason for this is so they can be absolutely certain that the person who picks up the item, is the one paying for it.

Example: You sell something and agree to having the buyer pay by PayPal and pick up the item in person. You get the PayPal notification that you've received the money and tell the buy to come and get the item.

Someone arrives at your door and picks up the item. So far so good.

A few days later you find a "Dispute" registered on your PayPal account for that transaction. The buyer is claiming they never picked up the item. Or, that it was an unauthorized transaction and they never bought it in the first place.

You may have a problem at this point. How do you "Proove" the person picked up the item? When you ship, you have post office receipts, etc. to show you shipped the item. You have your ebay reputation. But not so with a personal pick up. This is why some ebay sellers won't accept PayPal on pick ups.

Solution: (Possible, suggested....)

  • One thought is to take a picture of the person receiving the item when they come and pick it up.
  • A second thought is to ALSO ask to see a "Photo ID" of some sort. Drivers license would be good. Make sure the name is the same as the buyer and that the picture matches. WRITE DOWN THE LICENSE NUMBER!.
  • This way you at least have something tangible to give to PayPal, if the transaction is disputed, that proves the buyer did come to you and retrieve the item.

Buyers AND Sellers need to take every reasonable step to protect themselves. There are a lot of scammers out there on both sides of the equation.

There's another one out there.  The guy claims to be a marine engineer who can't access his bank account to pay western union, so sends the money to me through PayPal.  PayPal puts a hold on it so I have to pay Western Union before they, PayPal will release the funds.  The guy who finally bought the item very kindly warned me about this scam, and although I did provide my PayPal name and my phone number, I'm not out the $400 it would have cost me.

Just so you know, the clues are

  • bad grammar and poor english
  • immediately willing to pay your full asking price
  • a lot of back and forth emails about the problems he's having paying the pick-up agent himself.

Don't fall for it ... if it looks too good to be true, IT IS.

Hi,

I am presently going through a similar scenario. I put up my bike for sale on kijiji. This guy wants it but says he is out of town at the moment and says he will pay by Paypal and have his agent pick it up. He is offering full price I am asking. He will not give me his permanent address or confirm where he is now.

He also keeps referring to the ITEM and not the bike in his emails.

I really do not feel comfortable about this. I offered him to send by paypal to the AGENT so he can pay cash on delivery, but he says its too complicated.

Other similarity is that he answered my kijiji with a few hours of my posting. Now I am not selling my bike for 50$. Its a special bike and a big ticket item.

Should I just tell him no go unless its cash on delivery?
