Reference Transactions

Hello --

We are approved for reference transactions. I have read about setting up the billing aggreement with the Express Checkout API but am wondering how the business process works?

For example: We will be capturing $400 deposits for adventure travel trips. Then 60 days prior to departure there is a balance due where some of our clients opt to have automatically billed. Do we go into manager.paypal.com do bill using reference transactions? Before I set up the API, I want to make sure it will work for us and I am not seeing how to functionally process reference transactions through paypal.com nor manager.paypal.com

Thank you,

Travis

Welcome 29singlespeed! 🙂

Great question! I know we don't really make this very clear in the documentation.

Express Checkout Reference Transactions would have to be initiated by the DoReferenceTransaction API so ideally your website would be set to automatically call this API at the appropriate date.  Alternatively you could implement a button in your shopping cart or website software that would enable you to initiate that API call.

For direct credit card payments that were sent after Reference Transactions were enabled, the option to create a Reference transaction is on the transaction Details page for the original payment in manager.paypal.com.  These can also be initiated by the API but there's a manual option in the manager as well.

I hope this helps! 🙂
