International Fees - Help Me Understand

I'm trying to understand the breakdown of PayPal fees when receiving payments from overseas. I'd like to use this one as an example: I was owed £36.00 from someone in Japan. Current fees would be 3.9% + £0.20 fixed fee. I invoiced £37.67 but lost £2.16 which doesn't tally to the above rate. Can anyone break this fee down into easy chunks so I can understand it better?

Current fee is 3.4% + 20p for domestic UK.  For cross border, it's an additional 1.8%.  So it is 5.2%  + 20p.  You can invoice the buyer in GBP so there is no conversion fee as the amount taken in yen would be equivalent to the GBP you invoiced.

What are the details of the tranaction as in your account?

Your fees should be there.

Where can I find that info? All I can see are an amount received, a total fee and then the net amount. Thanks for any help.

I guess the fees aren't separated.

So your total is 37.67

Fees 2.16

Net 35.51

Is that correct?

Any currentcy conversion fees?

Was the transfer as direct for good/sservices or payment of invoice?

That's correct, was for goods and services. No idea about any currency conversion fees, just aware of the 3.9% + £0.20. There is the 1.8% cross border fee but not sure if this is relevant or how to apply it in this calculation.

3.9+1.8=5.7%

37.67 X 5.7% = 2.15

Ah, I see... Where does the £0.20 fixed fee get added?

Probably some rounding with less significant figures or the itnernation fee is slightly off or something else.  I was only giving an appoximate explanation.

Thank you, it certainly gets closer than I was able to. It's a shame PayPal don't make an official online calculator available.

Another example here, same goods / services payment from Japan:

Amount received: £100.10 GBP
Fee amount: -£5.41 GBP
Net amount: £94.69 GBP

Which is definitely not working from the 5.7% example, more like 5.4% or thereabouts.

How do you get there from 3.9% + 1.8% ??
