Unable to use cleared balance for purchase (account requires a funding source popup)

Trying to complete an online purchase of £20 and message tells me my account needs a funding source, even though my cleared balance is £26 - not the first time this has happened, (though I have also had transactions go through without issue) any thoughts?

You can use your balance without adding a bank account or a card for a few transactions and then paypal would tell you to add a bank or card to verify your paypal account and act as a back up funding source.

Then you can..........

Click on the profile tab (icon next to log out) > Click on payments third option along on the thick blue band top of page > second down click on update next to your preferred way to pay and put a dot in the balance option.

Thanks, but are you referring to website or app, as I don't seem to have a 'profile tab'. I have 'profile settings' and 'account settings' in a dropdown menu from my username, but neither shows a 'payments' option in the header.
