Paypal debit card payment showing as "Pending" then charged again.

I paid a company for services using my PayPal debit card. At the time of paying, the amount was removed from my available balance. I later noticed the payment within my PayPal app was showing as "pending". Today I got a notification from the PayPal app saying "You have paid {company name} £x.xx" and noticed that the total amount has now been taken from my available balance AGAIN.


My understanding is that the original payment is simply a hold on the account for the full amount, but when does the hold get released? As it stands PayPal have removed £80 from my balance for a £40 transaction.


Any advice is greatly appreciated.
