Incorrect information and unknown bank account details

I have been attempting to resolve a problem with Paypal for several days and do not appear to be making any progress. Although using Paypal for many years, I have never used it to receive money, only for purchases. Two days ago I received a payment for the first time. I transferred it to my bank account. I received an email notification of the transaction, however the bank account details were wrong. I checked with my bank and the transfer has not been received. I checked my account details on Paypal and the last four digits of a bank account are displayed, purporting to be my bank account. It is not. I requested the transaction be cancelled. I am informed that it cannot be. I then requested a resolution but was told no refund would be issued. Last night I asked for the data held by Paypal and received it today. It is full of inaccuracies. Multiple addresses that I have no connection with, credit and debit cards that are not mine and the bank account to which my money was transferred, also not mine. I have informed my bank of the situation but Paypal have only provided the last four digits of this account so the bank will struggle to locate it. I don't know if I am the victim of a scam or this is a simple error, but Paypal have been singularly unhelpful with one automated layer after another offering usless options. I will terminate my Paypal account but I need to try to tace my money before I do that. Any advice would be welcome.
