So I am after some information.

Once a refund has been issued from my end to a customer, do they receive notification right away that the refund has been issued? Or will they only become aware of it once the money actually hits their PayPal account?

They will be notified as soon as you refund.

However if you funded the refund via a bank account it would show on their paypal account as pending until cleared from your bank.

If it shows as completed on their paypal account then ...........If they funded the original Paypal payment to you from their bank account or a card then once marked refunded/completed it will automatically go back to that bank account or card.
Normally it can take a few days up to a week to go back to a bank account. Paypal say allow 30 days for a card (1 billing cycle) but its rarely that long.
(Can vary according to country though).
