Recently Paypal started scamming with currency exchange: eur payment from eur card goes eur-usd-eur

Yesterday I basically got scammed by Paypal, I was paying 54.4 euro for something, using my paypal account and my usual euro account (Revolut), from an european webshop (eurozone). I ended up paying 57 something because all of a sudden Paypal decided to convert it to USD and back. In the past for these payments it always was directly in euro so I don't understand what is going on.

When I try to raise an issue with the payment - of course - all of the categories are irrelevant and there is no possibility to raise an issue about this unnecessary exchange.

Today I bought something again and I paid special attention and again they wanted to do this exchange, I had to explicitly notice and change it.

Anyone has similar experience? I don't remember this happening, at least not for a long time. Did something change? Any recommendation?

p.s. it seems paypal also tries to prevent posting - i am filling captchas every single time i try to post (even if i just filled one earlier) and when i do i get some random error: first it was a mandatory label (i did not find relevant labels), then 'post flooding' (it is my first post ever here, i didn't post ever let alone past few minutes)...

Hello @potassium,

Welcome to our community forum and thanks for posting here!

I understand your concern about the currency conversion for your payment. When you make a payment in a foreign currency with your card, you can either choose PayPal conversion or your card issuer's conversion. If PayPal performs your currency conversion, you’ll be notified of the conversion rate at the time of the transaction and the details will reflect in the transaction details of your PayPal activity.

To get this checked further, please reach out to our team by clicking the contact us option at the bottom of PayPal page or send us a message through our Twitter(@AskPayPal) and Facebook page.

Have a great day!

The problem was I was NOT paying with foreign currency. I think this started in december, having double conversions.

I raised a complaint in email, got a copy paste answer telling me to use chat instead. I used chat, I was told by a robot I may get an answer in a few hours. Now I don't care if support is atrocious as long as I don't need it, but would be curious why chat, as an interactive method is seems to be preferred, when it's not really interactive actually.

Anyway unless this post is hidden or gets removed I intended it for other frustrated customers to be aware of these anti-consumer practices.
