Accidental Funds Sent Under Business Instead Of Family/Friends

Hello Community,

Coming to you since PayPal customer service has completely blown me off, and I'd like to get this out for everyone to see.

A friend of mine accidentally sent a payment to me for goods/services, when he meant it to be friends/family. I did not realize this until after I had accepted it. I do not own a business, and due to the amount that was sent, got flagged and put on hold plus fees were taken off. Along with that, PayPal is counting it as taxable income when that is not the case. I mistakenly initiated a transfer of roughly half of the total, since the other half was on hold. Thinking that Paypal errored out. However, after further inspection it was shown that it was a business expense. Upon learning this, I notified my friend to cancel/refund. They did so, but the refund did not come from the money that they sent. Instead, the money was taken out of my checking account. I have notified PayPal about this, along with my friend, and they have been completely ghosting us. They won't give the fee money back, they won't cancel any transfers, and overall are not helping at all. In my eyes, this is fraudulent charging and knowingly doing it when my friend has requested a change of category for the payment plus cancelling the refund if the fee gets removed. Otherwise, I'm going to be taxed for this money all together. If somebody can escalate this, please do so as it is a complete mess. "Nelson" the support agent has not helped, and utterly useless. Along with lying to me that he cannot transfer me to the dispute center due to an "update".

Paypal would only refund as a goodwill gesture, they do not have to and probably won't as it wasn't their mistake but your friends.

However as you were charged a fee (and the fee element is not returned as part of any refund made), then you may not have had enough in your balance for the full refund, so paypal charged your bank account instead.

Sorry but your friend is at fault and its not Paypals job to remedy that unfortunately.

Put it down to a learning curve? or see if your friend will foot the bill for the fee?
