Merchant - Getting IPN messages triggered for completed and cancelled recurring payments

I have a number of cancelled and completed recurring payments in the IPN history.  I (and the customer) are receiving emails because the IPN listener on the website is getting messages from Paypal which then triggers the email to both of us.  There are no actual transactions initiated however it is very confusing and very worrying that these email messages are generated and they are generated because there is an event at the Paypal end that is causing the listener at the website to generate the emails.  How do I stop this?  If recurring payments are cancelled then surely that should be the end of it?
