Received money from random account - is this a scam?

Hi, I just received money from a random person, who soon after opened a case dispute. I contacted them, and according to them, "it said someone added card, phone number, and several things and sent you $150. Don't know how this happened". meaning someone that they don't know, randomly sent money to me? This sounds super weird and suspicious to me, because my email is very specific, long and rare (hard to accidentally send to) and why would a random scammer send money to my account instead of their own. It's weird, so I just wanted to ask before I refund the transaction, is this some new sort of scam or legit?

Sounds to me like a scam.  What might happen is you will refund the amount, they will then dispute the payment, and you will get taken for the amount.  If they dispute the payment, go to your resolution center there, the incident will be recorded there, you can then answer there.  DO NOT refund the payment outside of the dispute if it is already started.  PayPal is set up to handle incidents like this and they should be handled in the proper way, In this case, since you said he has already started the dispute process, it needs to be handled through that process.

No matter what he says, PayPal will instruct you according to what information you submit on the "resolutions" page.  PayPal has the final say, NOT the other person.  Ask PayPal for assistance in how to proceed and do that.  It will then be on record, and if any issues arise they will already know about the incident.
