729725 vs 72975

Is anyone experiencing this where 2-factor is sending codes from both 729725 AND 72975? I am positive the latter is a scam, however, I tested it this morning when I requested a code and the code came from it instead of the official one (729725). My account was breached a couple of times earlier this year and now I'm concerned. I don't know why codes are being sent to me from BOTH of these numbers.

Any ideas? I'm really over these scammers.

Thank you for responding PayPal_JonK.

I will confess I am pretty surprised. Presuming this is a phishing attack ( I did not request any security code. I actually authenticator setup as my two factor authentication method.), how can someone access Paypal's number 729725 and send texts from it?

@Get2bpadmana

Welcome back. The communications sent from PayPal's security systems are not manually sent, they are automatically sent when the notifications parameters / triggers are met. Our security systems can not be manually turned on or off nor accessed, so if you're receiving a notification from them, it normally means a specific security parameter has been met. You may have received that security code because someone is requesting a password change. With that in mind, it may be best to update your password and security questions and check your account for any other unrecognized activity. If you don't see any, updating your password should be enough.

Best wishes,

I too have just received 2 separate texts with security codes.  One of them from the 729725 number as mentioned above, but the other is from 72975.  Is 72975 also a legit PayPal number?

Hello @drennen42

Thanks for reaching out on the PayPal Community Forum, and welcome!

I'm sorry to hear about the concerning messages you've received. The numbers 729725 (PAYPAL) and 72975 (PAYPL) are both numbers used by PayPal to send SMS. If you did not request any codes and have not logged into your account recently, please use these Help Center instructions to reset your password and security questions. I also suggest checking out these tips when creating a password. If you'd like to learn a bit more about receiving messages from PayPal, you can also visit this Community article.

I hope this helps!

I also keep getting texts from 72975. I changed my password and then I received another code the next day. Is there anything else I should be doing? It doesn't seem like changing my password is helping. Thanks.

Hello @mdn71

Congratulations on your first post in the PayPal Community Forum!

I certainly understand how worrisome it would be to keep receiving security texts even after resetting your password. I'm sorry to hear it keeps happening to you. I just found that a couple of similar issues were reported to our technical support teams over the last few days. When you have a moment, please contact our Customer Support teams by selecting 'Contact' at the bottom of any PayPal website.

Customer Support will be able to help you review the account to ensure there weren't any suspicious login attempts, and if not, they can add your example to the ticket with our technical support teams for further investigation. As a temporary workaround, if you have another phone number, you could remove your current phone number and add the other to your account. However, this wouldn't be necessary if Support doesn't find any signs of suspicious logins.

I hope this helps and that you stop receiving the codes soon!
