PAYPAL INST XFER WEB ID: PAYPALSI77

How safe is PayPal now?   Somebody has used my son's account and did ACH Debit 3 times for a total of $450.

All transactions were debited directly from his checking account and payable to Web ID: PAYPALS77

PAYPAL INST XFER DELEESA2011 WEB ID: PAYPALSI77 $50.00

PAYPAL INST XFER SOFTCELBERG WEB ID: PAYPALSI77 $200.00

PAYPAL INST XFER GCHAZ193 WEB ID: PAYPALSI77 $200.00

The funny thing is there was no activity at all in his Summary/Activity.  So, he called PayPal and they told him that somebody has used his identity to open another account and done bogus transactions in another country.  PayPal closed the fake account instantly and advised my son to contact his bank to do neccesary steps for his own protection.

I don't understand why PayPal could not stop any cloning account without verifying first.  As far as I remember you need to verify and confirm even for an email change.  Is PayPal really safe now?

I had this happen to me too BUT - it turns out that it in my case it wasn't fraud or an error - just an unfortunate use of the word "transfer" when in fact it wasn't a transfer to my PayPal account at all, instead, it was a PAYMENT to my PayPal Credit account.  Specifically the message on my bank account was "PAYPAL INST XFER *********<removed> WEB ID: PAYPALSI77" but it was really a payment.  I'm guessing that wording has caused confusion for a lot of other people as well.  Someone (PayPal or the bank) should seriously consider changing the wording to something a bit more transparent/meaningful.

I’m glad that in your case it was legit. In most of these cases, people do not have their CHASE (it’s always Chase) checking accounts connected in any way to their PayPal accounts. I didn’t. I had just opened my Chase checking account and had no activity (of my own) in it yet when it happened to me. I had no debit card for the account, had never written a check and had no online activity. Just the initial opening deposit. These PayPal transactions went on for 6 months before I noticed because I wasn’t checking the account because I k ew I wasn’t using it. I did get all my money back, but it was a long and hard struggle.
