Help me please

My friend is trying to send me a large sum of money through Paypal to help me with my hospital bills, but he says the money is sent and will only be deposited in my account if I pay $45 to make my account compatible for the payment. Should I pay $45? If I don't pay what will happen to the money that my friend sent?

Hi @John696

Thank you for your post and welcome to the Community. I'm very sorry to hear about the hospital bills you're facing. I've definitely experienced those and it can be a crushing weight.

I'm also very sorry to hear that you're interacting with someone in in a situation that has all the ear markings of a common scam. In this type of scam, a person will befriend the intended scam victim, offer to send them a large sum of money, and then advise that there is a fee of some kind for receiving that money, or for changing their account, or something similar. Do not send any money. You should never have to send money to receive money, and your payment would not be eligible for protections as a Friends and Family payment. The likelihood is that there is not actually a payment to you, or that in the rare event that there is, it is from a stolen account or stolen payment source.

It's awful and especially predatory to take advantage of someone in a vulnerable position of medical debt, and I'm very sorry that you have had this experience. I'm glad you thought to question it and came here for advice.
