In the end the apparently helpful tech support person I spoke to at PayPal never got back to me with a workable solution.
So, the procedure involving downloading your (monthly) transaction history in CSV format and then processing that information into a usable form as I described above is as good as you will get from PayPal. The fact that this information stream contains a running balance yet the hyperlink on the website stating the provision of a balance contains none is puzzling to say the least. Either PayPal's techies are not competent enough to migrate the data onto a user friendly platform or are motivated to not do so. I couldn't possibly comment as to which option I suspect is to blame!
