receiving payment for auto sold on Craigslist

If a party wishes to purchase my advertised car, without even seeing it, other than pictures. . .  and wants to pay via pay pal , is there any risk to me ?   Once I see money in my account I am assuming it is safe to relinquish possession of car to buyer ?

A little nervous about selling cat this way . . . never sold a car this way before.

HI bkbill!

I understand your concern!   I would encourage you to review our seller protection policy.

https://www.paypal.com/sellerprotection

If the buyer sends you money through PayPal and it is completed to your PayPal account, doesn't always mean it is safe.  The buyer has 45 days to file a dispute against you through PayPal, and if the payment is made with a credit card, the dispute timeframe depends on that credit card company.

As a seller you have seller protection for merchandise that you ship and can provide proof of delivery for.  Since you are selling a car, there is no seller protection for this type of merchandise.

Anytime you sell online, there are always going to be risks.  I would make sure you do your homework and review how you are protected...on the other side of things..selling online doesn't always mean that something will go wrong, or the buyer will try to fraud you.

I hope this was helpful!  Please let us know if you have any further questions.

I would strongly suggest not selling a car that way on Craigslist. If someone is serious about buying it sight unseen- have them send a check/money order and put it on security hold at your bank.

99% of car buying sight unseen on Craigslist is a fraud anyways.
