I have an offer to buy my car and the buyer, who is from another area of the country, wants to pay by PayPal. I have only used PayPal for purchases. Can someone please tell me how this works and what to look for to be sure this isn't a con?  .

Hello Kerrycwells,

I was trying to sell my car on craigslist.  On 11/20 I had an interested buyer e-mail me.  He asked the normal question of the condition etc.  I let him know the condition and informed him I was out of town at the moment, but when I return we could set up arrangements for him to see/drive the car.  He thanked me and informed that he wanted to buy it site unseen.   He stated he was out of town in the military and wanted to buy it for his Dad.  Due to the nature of his work he couldn't make phone calls, and visiting websites was limited.  He saw my ad and had to e-mail me about it.  He insisted on Paypal, because it was so safe and he didn't have internet banking or credit card.  He also stated he had a pickup agent that will come and pick the car up after he makes payment.  I replied giving him my e-mail for paypal, and telling him once payment was sent and verified by my bank he could send whoever to pick-up the car and we could make arrangements for pickup if he agreed to everything.  On 11/21, he send me an Urgent e-mail stating he was just about to make payment and had a problem with the pick-up agent,  they needed payment of commission fee before pick-up.  He informed me the headquarters was in Nevada..that all payments go to headquarters and the only payment they accept is western union.  He said he tried to pay online but he didn't bring a credit card with him and no post office etc.  So, he wants me to send $900.00 by western union to Nevada.  I e-mailed him right back and said to find another vehicle to purchase,  I wasn't selling to him and was only dealing locally.  He replied with, "I just want you to help me do the western union to my pick up agent as soon as I make payment okay....."  I did not reply to him!

Five hours later I receive a message stating payment had been received into my Paypal account.  It said, " A Temporary Hold has been placed on this transaction", once I send the $900.00 by Western Union and scan the receipt to them, they will release the total amount to me.

Total SCAM....I didn't do it and I have not replied back to the buyer, but he is trying to contact me still.  This morning I just received an e-mail saying Legal ACtion is being placed on me from PayPal and the FBI has taken control of my computer.  I would supply the complete e-mail addresses, one from comcast.net, officeemail.net and crispcleaners.com, but I'm not allowed on this forum.

I deleted my paypal account for this transaction and reopened a new one.  I never plan on using it again unless I know the person and trust the situation.

Tried to be SCAMMED, but was smarter than that!  Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up. I am and was suspicious. If he tries this I will ask him to send the sales price and the shipping fee. See what he says. The name was Rodney Rodriguez. Well surprise I just got his email and it is exactly what you said. Thanks

Yes, I sent my email and paypal confirmed that they were fake. The name of my guy is "Johnson Bradson", I'm sure it is fake too.

This is the new big thing when it comes to the scams on selling cars and stuff.  They pretend to be in the military -- to draw on that patriotic thread running through us all -- and tell you they're just about to ship out and need to buy the car for a pregnant wife being left behind, or for his poor mother, so she can get around after he goes off to war -- you name it, they've done it.  And the sleezier the ruse, the better - at least as far as they're concerned.

Unless someone is willing to do the deal with you IN PERSON, stay as far away as you can.

I am so thankful that I decided to check into this forum! I actually put my truck on creigs list and had an offer right away. This "Andrew David" said he was a petro.engineer and is off shore and was wanting to buy it for his son as a Christmas gift. HE ALSO said that he would have an AGENT come pick it up! So far that's as far as I have gotten with him. I told him I didn't feel comfortable going threw pay pal for such a big transaction and to let me check into this. Well, Im glad I did! Thanks a bunch!

Send the email that you think is from paypal to spoof@paypal.com. They will verify if it is real or not.
