2 Debit Cards

PayPal just sent me a "replacement" debit card but I already had one that doesn't expire for another year. Now I have 2 cards with different numbers. I'm not sure if I should destroy one as it's confusing to have 2 cards connected to the same account. I assume both are valid. They both have chips, so it's not like they were replacing a card without a chip. This doesn't seem like an urgent problem, I just don't understand why they sent me a new one.

I replaced the damage card with a card of the same number so I wouldn't have to change everything that is auto pay, and because I knew it wasn't stolen. So they have the exact same numbers and what I want to know is when I activate the new one, does that render the old one invalid and usable? Or can I hide one in my car for emergencies in case I lose my wallet again?
