Payment preferences

I’ve set my payment preferences ages ago. All of a sudden it’s started going out of my back up payment (credit card). I’ve checked both app and website and it’s still showing as my bank account as preferred payment- there’s plenty of money in it so why would it take from my back up credit card? TIA.

Keep in mind that payments involving billing agreements, recurring payments, subscriptions are not set by the Preferred Payment Method setting in the Wallet. You'll have to go to:

Go to Account Settings (gear icon) > Payments > Manage Automatic Payments

Select merchant on left, click Edit on the right, to change payment method.

But I believe bank accounts cannot be used as back up on Automatic Payments, just cards. So if you have a bank account debit card linked, select that instead of linked credit card.

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂

Thank you for the response. I’ve checked it and both bank account and credit card are ticked but it’s saying it will use, PayPal balance and then bank account in that order. In reality, it’s going straight to credit card?

I’ve tried unticking the credit card to stop that option but it then gives an error box stating “you can’t remove all of your instant funding sources from merchant relationships. Please select at least one source from the below list”. In that list I have my credit card and bank details (which are ticked). It’s like it’s not recognising my bank anymore?

Hi @Scuttler01,

I'm sorry to hear that your bank has not been used for a pre-approved payment. It sounds like the bank has been declined for the purposes of paying that merchant. That can happen for a few different reasons. If the issue persists, you can contact customer service to look into the declines.

To contact customer service, please click Contact at the bottom of the PayPal website for available options, or reach out by PM on Facebook or DM on Twitter.

I hope this helps!

For years, when I bought something on ebay it used PayPal funds to pay for it.  Sometime in about the past year it started taking from my linked bank account instead.  Recently I started using the Print Mailing Label feature from ebay, and that also takes from my bank account.  This is a bigger issue because I want to print hundreds of mailing labels from ebay each month.  I want it to take from Paypal if the funds are there, which they were in every instance.  When I call ebay, they say it's completely due to Paypal.  When I go to Paypal support, they tell me how to set the Preferences - which I've told them many times does not work for me - and then they say it's an ebay problem and close the issue.  When I go to Paypal, Choose Wallet tab, it only shows my bank account and forces me to select it or it won't let me click Done.  I don't want that, I want Paypal funds.   When I left it unselected Paypal still took money from my bank account first, even though sufficient funds were in the paypal account.  There must be somebody else who has run into this, or somebody at Paypal support who cares.  I really don't want to list anything on ebay until this is resolved.
