Hi,
I would like to make a purchase from ebay and pay through Paypal - but there are no funds in my Paypal account.
Will Paypal take the funds out of my bank account, or do I have to top up my Paypal account before I can make a purchase?
Many thanks.

Hi Emmacoombs23 and welcome,
From reading your post it sounds like you may have part funded your payment using some funds from your PayPal balance and your card. When the payment was refunded, the funds that came from your balance were added back to your balance and the funds that came from your card have now been returned to your card.
If you click on the details of the transaction it will show you were your refund was sent to.
I hope this helps and thanks for posting
Paula

That's a clearly laid out process, thank you. I just made a payment via Virgin Giving, knowing that I had 0 balance in my PayPal account and expecting the amount to be taken from my credit card which is linked and confirmed. I don't not have a debit card linked to my account but the payent was taken from my current account and not my credit card. This sent my current account overdrawn resulting in £40 of bank charges.
I have spokjen to customer services but couldn't really understand why the transcation wasnt charged to my confirmed credit card as I expected apart from a 'glitch'. I don't think this is really acceptable but was it my fault? Or the system?

If you have a bank account linked and verified on your paypal account then that is the default option that paypal will use (if there are no funds in your paypal balance).
But if you want to use your c.c. instead then you need to select "other funding options" just above where it states the amount to be deducted and select your c.c. ............you need to do this each time you pay during the payment process.

Hi there!
Up until recently, the payments used to be taken off of paypal balance first, but all of a sudden it looks like my debit card is being debited for most of the purchases, whereas my paypal balance remains unchanged. I want to use up that money first, but don't understand why this is happening or how to fix it. Thanx for your help!

I am trying to make a payment with no funds in my Paypal account.
I have done this in the past using a Mastercard, but now I wish the money to be taken from my bank account, so I followed the procedure to link the bank account, and it seems to have worked - a Direct Debit for Paypal has appeared on the bank account, and further attempts to link the bank account in Paypal tell me it's already linked.
However, when I try to make a payment, it offers me the Mastercard as a method, and when I click the 'Change' button, the bank account is not available as an alternative.
What am I doing wrong?

Have you verified your bank account by adding the 4 digit code??

Indeed I have. My account profile shows the bank account details as linked, and the bank has Paypal's Diirect Debit mandate set up. Paypal also allowed me to transfer some cash from the bank to my Paypal account, so then I could make the payment using the balance in the Paypal account.
But it won't just take the money for the payment automatically from the bank as I expected, and keeps asking me to link a credit/debit card. I don't want to do that, because I don't want to pay Paypal's exorbitant charges.

I think i see what the problem is.
To use your bank account and use instant bank transfer you have to have a back up card linked to your paypal account as well, so that if you are overdrawn etc they have a back up funding source to use.
What do you mean by charges by linking a card?? As a buyer you don't pay any charges.
I use my c.c. all the while for extra protection.
