Hi,
I would like to make a purchase from ebay and pay through Paypal - but there are no funds in my Paypal account.
Will Paypal take the funds out of my bank account, or do I have to top up my Paypal account before I can make a purchase?
Many thanks.

To use your bank account and use instant bank transfer you have to have a back up card linked to your paypal account as well, so that if you are overdrawn etc they have a back up funding source to use.
What do you mean by charges by linking a card?? As a buyer you don't pay any charges.
I use my c.c. all the while for extra protection.
Thanks, now it (sort of) makes sense. Pity I couldn't find that explanation anywhere obvious in the Help. I'll do it by transferring the amount from my bank first, then, in future, as I did this time. It all happened more or less instantly anyway.
As for charges - if I select 'Personal payment' and choose to pay by Credit/Debit card, I am charged £0.91 for the transaction - I can specify that it be paid by the recipient if I want my friend to be charged, otherwise I pay it. On a small payment (in my case £20) that is exorbitant IMV. Payments from my Paypal balance or direct from my linked bank account are free.
I might use a CC for a commercial transaction for the reason you suggest.
Grateful for the response.

I see what you mean, yes personal payments are only free if you don't use a card.
But if you are a buyer paying a seller there is no fee.
Advice is voluntary.
Kudos / Solution appreciated.

Hi @ClareK1,
Thank you for your post and welcome to our Community Help Forum!
When you send money, we try to use any available balance in your PayPal account to fund the payment. If you don’t have money in your PayPal balance, we try to debit the amount from your confirmed bank account via direct debit. If you don’t have a confirmed bank account, we’d try to debit the amount from a credit card, if you’ve one registered. If you want, you can set a preferred payment method in your Wallet. Select your funding source and click Set as preferred. You also have the option to change your funding source for a payment on the last page before you send money.
Note: You may incur a fee if we try to debit your bank account but we’re denied, due to insufficient funds for example.
I hope this helps.
Cristina

Does Paypal make a charge when they pay for an item using your bank account?
I have received a DD from Paypal for £48.44, and there is nothing about it on my Paypal statement, nor did I get an email for what the charge is

Buyers don't pay fees.
The amount of money on your direct debit would have been the "last" payment you made to a seller.

Hi. Be careful if you do not have any funds in your paypal account or in your nominated account and have acredit card for back up, the transaction for this money to come out of your credit card takes up to 7 working days. In the mean time if your nominated account does not have a overdraft, you will be charged for not having the money in your account, which then up to 7 days later will be collected from your credit card anyway. So pointless thinking that the money will auotmatically come out of your credit card and you will be safe, as this is not the case.
