PayPal funds vs debit card

I Purchased some thing online with my PayPal account. My account is set to use funds from PayPal first, however it used the funds from my debit card instead. Even though My PayPal account has ample funds. Why is this?

If it was a subscription then it would not use your balance.

Failing that it normally would as long as the funds were in the correct currency / available and not pending.

However sometimes for higher risk items paypal may take from a card instead for security reasons.
