Hello everyone!
One of the greatest strengths consumers possess against fraud and phishing is education and collaboration. To help support your safety online, I'm going to open this special thread up for you. Here, you can post examples of what you believe to be attempts by individuals to defraud you or others of their hard earned valuables and money.
Before we begin, a few housekeeping points:
- We will be using this as a "master thread," so if we find an example in other areas of the boards, we may merge the post into this one.
- For everyone's safety, please remove any last names or contact information (including email addresses) from your examples. In many instances, the names provided by fraudsters are fake or may actually be the name of someone they already defrauded.
- On that same note, please don't ever attempt to confront a fraudster or attempt to track them down. Instead, turn the information you do have over to your local authorities.
- Please also remove any links from your posts, as these could potentially go to spoofed or phishing websites.
Other than that, we only ask that you keep it productive and stay within the Forum Decorum and posting guidelines. I'll be stopping in on a regular basis to clean house and comment on posts, so don't be surprised if you see my mug - or another moderator - stopping in to say hello!
With that said, I'm going to start moving posts in, so you might see some older examples mixed in with the new posts. I hope this thread becomes a great resource for everyone!
Stay safe,
Adrian

I received an e-mail from 'PayPal' informing me that my account was suspended on June 8th, 2012 and that I would need to go dispute the case. Strangely, the e-mail was sent directly to my junk folder and not my actual e-mail inbox folder like all my other paypal emails that I've received before...
DO NOT ENTER YOUR E=MAIL+PASSWORD INTO THIS LINK!
It looked real at first, with the email address saying "paypal" but I noticed that the website wasn't secure. I also went to my official PayPay favorite tab to ensure I was going to the real PayPal site, looked at my account and there was no activity of suspension or disputed cases.
I'm sure anybody can be easily fooled. We must report this to the authorities immediately!

Hi miss_pouchy,
That doesn't sound legit to me at all. I expect that there are no funds showing in your PayPal account and any emails you received stating that you had been paid with PayPal are probably fake. Why would he not be able to pay his shipper via Western Union himself? Also, this is a situation we've seen many times in the past and usually it's always somebody stating they are on an off-shore rig.
I'm glad you checked with the community about this. 🙂

Hi robcat,
This seems extremely suspicious. The fact that's he's having someone else pick it up and he's claiming that he'll be including extra money for you to pay a shipping fee are both earmarkings of commonly used tactics in fraud. Additionally suspicious is that he hasn't even referred to the specific item once in the whole email, which might indicate a form response.
You can learn about safety, protection, and some common fraud schemes in these great resources:
- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police: Scams and Fraud
- The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
- US Internet Crime Complaint Center
- US National Fraud Information Center
- US Department of Justice
- Craigslist's Safety Tips

I'm glad you decided to consider this before entering into it. It's always smart to listen to that gut instinct and be cautious! 🙂

Hi DGUY,
Welcome to the Community! 🙂
The elements of this email make it seem likely to be legitimate. To be sure, open up a fresh browser, type in paypal.com, and log in that way. When you get logged in, you will likely see the payment there. If you see the payment, that means it's not a phishing email after all.
Did you or someone in your household buy a pretty brown purse? Make sure to check with anyone who has access to your computer, even if they have their own account. Sometimes family members in the same household mistakenly use each other's accounts and confusion ensues until everyone gets home that evening and shares the events of the day. I'll bet it's something as simple as that. 🙂
If no one in your household made this eBay purchase, worry not! We've got you covered! Go to the Resolution Center and dispute the payment. PayPal covers unauthorized purchases 100%! After a review, we'll whisk the money back to the payment source from whence it came! 🙂
Let us know how it turns out!

So, being that this is the first time I have ever sold anything online, I was a bit suspicious! I have some items listed (as a set) on a national classified website. I received one email enquiring about the items, which seemed fine. Much later that same day (same day as item was posted for sale) I receive this email: "Anything to add or ads say it all?" from a yahoo address. I replied back yes, that's it. At 3:25 AM, I received another message, this time from a different address (a gmail account): "Thanks for the mail,i just wanted to make sure nothing has been left out,i will take it for the listed price,Payment will be sent using PayPal and i will handle the PayPal surcharge as well.I will arrange with someone to have this picked up for your location once i have paid as i am out of town at the moment. I would appreciate if you email me with more pictures (if available) too, since i won't be be able to see this in person, what's the PayPal email to send funds to in order for me to pay you ASAP."
As I said, this being my first sale, I didn't think anything of it. I sent more pictures. A couple of hours later I received this:"NOTE: This is to confirm to you that the said amount has been successfully transferred by (purchaser's name)and has been deducted from his PayPal account, which is ready to be credited into your account, been that this Payment has been subjected to be a Payment for an MERCHANDISE purchased from you, we reserve the right to make sure this transaction is safe and secured also to verify the legitimacy level on this transaction because of the high sum of funds involved. The above sum includes thecharges of the shipping company and taxes.(as per PayPal MERCHANDISE PAYMENT POLICY). You will receive a Message from the PayPal Customer Verification Department Shortly informing you on how to send the shipping charges and taxes to the transport company to the above details as soon as possible." Immediately following this email, I received another: "
You have received a PayPal Payment of $2,000.00 CAD from (purchasers's name and email address).
A temporary hold has been placed on this transaction!
Please, find below the name and address of the shipping company's agent whom you are to send the funds would be sent via western union
click here to find the nearest western union office

(1) Sender's Name;

Okay, so now I am skeptical. The UK, really? My furniture being shipped to the UK, Why? So again, I sent an email by 'Clicking Here' and telling them that I did not have the funds available until the money was received in my PayPal account. I also asked if this was legitimate. Haha, read the following, which is their answer: "Thanks for contacting us in regards to this transaction,PayPal would want to inform you that this transaction is a legitimate. The total sum of $2,000.00 CAD has been deducted from the buyer's PayPal account and is being held here at our database ready to be remitted into your PayPal account once we receive the Western Union Information that the shipper fees has been sent. All you need do is to provide funds from your own hands to send to shipping agent as specified and email PayPal with a scanned copy of the western union receipt.
Being an international transaction,we want you to understand that the payment can't be reversed nor can it be canceled or split, due to security measure for international transaction. We therefore advice you to complete the transaction by transferring the sum of $700.00 CAD to the agent address through western union and get back to us with the western union transfer information for verification and confirmation of the transfer to enable us get your PayPal account credited. You can use the above link to find an agent location or you can use it to send the money online.
Name:
City:
Post Code:
Country: United Kingdom.
(2) Receiver's Name;
(5) Western Union Receipt
The PayPal Team"........
If the grammatical errors weren't enough to make me question the legitimacy of this 'sale' the rest of this would scream SCAM!
I have since sent an email to the purchaser, advising him that I have no intention of sending the money via Western Union, unless the entire amount is received into my account! It has been 4 1/2 hours and I have not received anything from him threatening or warning me to send money. Will keep this post updated if I hear anymore!
