Default Payment Method?

I just got finished verifying my bank account with my Paypal account. I then received a message that from now on, all purchases will be made from my bank account instead of the card I have registered. Is there a way to change that setting and choosing which account payments are automatically paid from? I do NOT want payments made automatically from my checking account. I only added my checking account for  just in case purposes and to give me a wider range of options.

Hi viking2 and Liberalman,

That isn't a matter of the seller's preference preventing the credit card being used in that situation. That would be the security model evaluating the available funding options, and ruling out the card for use. The grayed out option indicates that the card is not available for use in that transaction.

I understand the frustration you're experiencing. Even though I'm an employee, my own transactions are subjected to all the same security reviews. I've had it happen to me before that I was unable to use the funding source I wanted to use. It is inconvenient, but it's part of the larger picture that makes PayPal the safer way to pay and be paid.

well I'm glad to see that a paypal moderator has commented here. i understand you are an employee, but an employee with a boss and another boss who make decisions. why can we not select our default card? it's a simple question and we want answers. i do a lot of online shopping, and lately i have been selecting to pay with my credit card directly rather than paypal. i've avoided ebay altogether, so other sellers are suffering. it's a trickle down effect. so even if this default bank garbage is to save $ somehow with paypal, they are losing money in the long run. so something has to give soon. please pass on to the powers that be that we are all unhappy about this and are opting for other payment options when available.

Olivia,

If it's true that the sellers are at fault, then why are they allowed to"intice" a buyer with the logos of credit cards that one may use, only to find out once you've won the auction, then it's oh, we only accept bank transfers. Paypal aka Ebay is letting the buyers use these logos, then allowing said buyers to do the "OLD SWITCHEROO" on the buyer. Bait and Switch Baby!!!

I don't know if it's the sellers or paypal doing this. I paid for another item yesterday and it did it again. I have two credit cards on file with paypal. One is checked as my preferred method of payment. Also my bank is on file with paypal, I'm paypal verified and have a premier account to sell in the future. The sellers show the different credit cards that they accept as payment on their listings, with the picture of the cards, i.e.. Visa, Mastercard. If I hit the BUY NOW icon I'm then directed to another page that's has the COMMIT TO BUY icon. I select that and it then reads "you've made a purchase", or something to that effect. Then the next page shows the options to pay with the BANK FUNDS TRANSFER already pre-checked with a dot in the circle. If I try to check the circle in front of the CREDIT CARD option instead, it won't move over to it. That option lettering is a lighter shade of color that the BANK FUND OPTION. I either accept it or cancel the the whole thing, leaving it bought, but unpaid for and no other way to pay. These auctions stated that Paypal is their only method of payment, so that eliminates checks or money orders(which would cost a fee to get one). I tried writing Paypal and the community forum, but that's worthless. I called Paypal 3 times and got a different Spanish speaking persons each time. No offense to Hispanics, but I can't understand their accents when they're trying to speak English. It appears Paypal has outsourced their support staff to Mexico. The people I called didn't think what I explained to them was possible. I tell them I'm looking right at the screen and its true. So, I say well, I guess were done here, because you can't help me, and GOODBYE. The whole thing sounds like a bait and switch to me. You just get dead ends when you try to solve it. CROOKS!!

Odd?  No. This is not the forum to get political, but the parallel between this and health care is striking.  This is the free market at work. Absent contols, as long as the industry -- in this case Paypal --  can get away with it, they will. To them, it has little to do with the service they provide.  It's as simple as the difference between making a gazillion or only 7/8 of a gazillion.

It always amazes me how large companies will ignore the average person until something is done to something hurt their image. Shine a light on the rats and they go scampering. I'm seriously considering contacting my State Attorney General tomorrow via email. While I'm at it maybe the local St. Louis TV stations. They're usually eager to do stories on crooked companies. Bad press is very bad for business!  Corporatism is Capitalism's ugly sister. Corporations want free trade yet they don't like competion, so they swallow up small companies. They outsource and insource so they don't have to pay a decent wage. They buy their polititians with the help of the 5 crooks in the Supreme Court. They prop up dictators in foreign lands so they can gain access to the wealth of the country. They buy their own media i.e. Fox "News" to make up phoney garbage 24/7(thanks Rupert Murdoch & you're media whores). The owners and CEOs roll around in filthy luxury while people lose their jobs, homes, lives, etc. Their media machine manages to brainwash people to vote against their own interests by playing on their fears, bigotries, religious beliefs and outright ignorance. These same people have the guts to call themselves "Christians", whatever that means anymore. The term Christian Conservative is an oxymoron. Sorry to go off, but Paypal/Ebay is just another money crubbing corporation without a conscience. The only thing they understand is $$$$$$$$$$$$. Go to the press, expose them nationally and sue them via your State Attorney( it does'st cost you anything).

Well, I logged on to PayPal tonight specifically to change my "default" setting of payment options.  My issue is complex and now that I am here I see that I was not wrong in wondering why in the world I could not find a place to "click" to change this.  I guess I am definately not alone.

My bank account on PayPal is my savings account.  It is this way because my checking account is a JOINT account w/hubby.  Hubby has a PayPal account and he used our checking account for HIS PayPal account.  PayPal will not let me use that account since somebody else is already using it on PayPal, so I had to use the savings account.

My credit card that I have on PayPal is actually my debit card.

This is extremely inconvenient.  I love to shop on Ebay and support WAHM (work at home moms) who sell hand made things there.  Almost all sellers on Ebay require us to use PayPal now.

This is very inconvenient and I even lost my ability to gain interest on my savings account b/c I did not realize the it was against the rules to go over a certain number of transactions per month b/c of PayPal.

This kinda **bleep**!

Let's face it, when you're the beneficiary of greed, it's "the free market."  When you're on the paying end, it's aggrevation and then some.

Obviously I share your frustration, Viking2.  However, what PayPal is doing is not illegal. No attorney general anywhere is going to sue them over a corporate policy just because folks don't like it. Their response is predictable: "Then don't do business with them." It's no different than when the Toyota Prius was introduced. It was popular but in short supply. Toyota dealers were charging surcharges over and above the retail price because they could get away with it. If you didn't like it, the answer there was the same: Then don't buy a Prius.  The answer here is obvious. PayPal is not inclined to change their policy. Then don't use PayPal. Your thoughts about warning the public certainly make sense. The key lies in publishing the issue beyond the confines of this forum.

I for one have begun only buying from eBay when it is the last resort for finding what I seek.

A word to Paypal_Olivia:  PayPal has been a worthwhile service in spite of this policy, not because of it.

I agree.  PayPal made the default payment change, so why "can't" they change it back.  I want my default payment to be my PayPal Balance, not the  PayPal Smart Connect, and if I don't pay attention the Smart Connect card is used.  aarrrggghhhh...
