Let's face it, when you're the beneficiary of greed, it's "the free market."  When you're on the paying end, it's aggrevation and then some.   Obviously I share your frustration, Viking2.  However, what PayPal is doing is not illegal. No attorney general anywhere is going to sue them over a corporate policy just because folks don't like it. Their response is predictable: "Then don't do business with them." It's no different than when the Toyota Prius was introduced. It was popular but in short supply. Toyota dealers were charging surcharges over and above the retail price because they could get away with it. If you didn't like it, the answer there was the same: Then don't buy a Prius.  The answer here is obvious. PayPal is not inclined to change their policy. Then don't use PayPal. Your thoughts about warning the public certainly make sense. The key lies in publishing the issue beyond the confines of this forum.   I for one have begun only buying from eBay when it is the last resort for finding what I seek.   A word to Paypal_Olivia:  PayPal has been a worthwhile service in spite of this policy, not because of it. ... Odd?  No. This is not the forum to get political, but the parallel between this and health care is striking.  This is the free market at work. Absent contols, as long as the industry -- in this case Paypal --  can get away with it, they will. To them, it has little to do with the service they provide.  It's as simple as the difference between making a gazillion or only 7/8 of a gazillion. ... View more

Very interesting, particularly coming immediately on the heels of Paypal_Olivia's response.  She clarified, "eBay sellers are not able to specify to take one type of funding and not another."  Yet, that is precisely what you say you have encountered.   It's not eBay sellers therefore doing this; it's PayPal. Their motive seems obvious enough.  Credit card purchases involve fees being paid back to M'card and Visa which cut into what PayPal makes on each transaction.  I think "greed" is more accurate than "crooks" in the circumstance.   There's always room for another service out there... ... Thank you for giving us some sort of a reply.   Let me make sure I understand you.  You are saying that sellers can restrict the manner in which we utilize our own PayPal accounts, for example requiring account debits as a means of payment?  If that is so, then only after we have committed to buy on eBay or elsewhere, we then can expect find ourselves potentially boxed into a method of payment?   Also, I would like to correct one statement in your reply.  You said PayPal "can't" always make the changes requested.  The operable word here is "won't."  There is no earthly reason why such a policy change could not be implemented. ... We all agree.  I suspect the reason Adrian has not responded is that he is nothing more than a mouthpiece for PayPal and can do no more than echo existing policy.   The real question then is whether Adrian, or whoever administers this board, recognizes the public discontent with the existing policy and is bringing it to the attention of policy makers at PayPal. Otherwise, this exercise and this board is little more than Internet masturbation. ... View more

I have the same problem. I do not want the bank account I used solely for verification purposes being used for payments, a problem you don't warn of when you encourage people to use an account to verify themselves.   I am aware of the "Other Options," election -- I have to use every single time I use PayPal.  The problem is that it is (a) in different places on different payment screens, and sometimes hard to find (it clearly was never meant by PayPal to be a popular option), and (b) frankly a pain in the _ss.   Thus your glib answer to us that the bank account is the default payment source, but don't worry, you can elect other options, is very unsatisfying. How we pay is our business, not yours. We ought to have the opportunity to set our default payment method. ... View more
