concerned about giving out info

Hi. I wanted to add funds from my bank account, but I can't because it requires additional verification. First of all, there is no way that I will give out my personal information due to all the crazy internet things out there. I don't want to give out sensitive info due to security reasons. Although adding funds from a bank account takes 3-5 days, I prefer this method because I don't know any store that sells a Moneypak card. I'm steamed that this is happening! I never had any problems before this. -___-*
I want this fixed.

Andy,

No, it doesn't help.  The choices you have presented me are to either give out excessive amounts of personal financial information (bank account number AND PIN, social security number, etc.) OR get one of your credit cards (which has highly unfavorable terms).  I'm not going to give you information that is an open invitation to identity theft fraud AND a violation of the bank's terms of service.  I'm also not going to sign up for a credit card at unfavorable rates just to keep using your service.

Be honest - this has nothing to do with complying with the regulations (which you can do WITHOUT either of these requests) and EVERYTHING to do with using the regulations as a smokescreen to increase your profitiability and control over your customers' finances.  In my case - FAIL.  I'm stoping using PayPal.

Wow, 14 pages of this! I agree wholeheartedly with everyone here. I tried to transfer money from a bank account used only for paypal, and they want my SSN??!!  My employer has my SSN, and my bank. THAT'S IT! I think I am going to close my paypal account and send money orders for purchases on ebay. That's what I did for years before ebay decided checks and money orders weren't generating enough money for them (they also own paypal.) At least with a money order I don't have to worry about someone stealing from my account (it's happened -- to the tune of $500) Good bye paypal!

You're not getting anything from me PayPal. Even if it means no more Ebay. I don't care, I'm done here.

I am done with eBay and Paypal.  I was going to list a pair of boots for sale yesterday.  I have had my eBay account for a year and a half and my Paypal account for 4 or more years.  Yesterday eBay told me that before I could list an item for sale that I would need to verify information that eBay obtained from Public Records.  eBay (which IS Paypal) asked random questions that had nothing to do with me.  Eventually they asked me to confirm a sequence of SS numbers that were mine.  I told the agent that my SS number was NOT a public record and that  the only way they could confirm my SS number would be if they had access to a Credit Bureau like Experian, Equifax or Transunion.  The agent denied everything, but claimed he couldn't confirm my account without it.  I told him to close my eBay account.  He wouldn't, so I did.  In addition, eBay and Paypal DO HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR CREDIT BUREAUS.  Several years ago while going through a similar verification, eBay told me who my mother was.  I asked how did they get that information when that is private information that I have never revealed it TO ANYONE.  When I am asked who my mother is, I state I don't know because I was adopted (it is none of their business).  Paypal and eBay ILLEGALLY ACCESS YOUR CREDIT INFORMATION.  THEY KNOW MUCH MORE ABOUT YOU THAN ANY PUBLIC RECORD WOULD REVEAL.  I will NEVER use either Paypal or eBay again.  Mark my words.

pay pal says additional info might be needed if:

  •      A customer recently moved and the records haven't been updated.
  •      A customer has recently had a name change for some reason.
  •      The customer is quite young and has no history we can verify.
  •      Or at the extreme end, the PayPal account was created with false information.

Let's see:  I'm a senior citizen, have lived at same address for 40 yrs, have my same name, have been using pay pal for 5 yrs.  Pay Pal has my DOB, bank routing number and last 4 of my social and now they say they can't verify my identity?  And they want my full social.  I don't think so.  Not being able to verify my identity with the info already on hand gives me very little confidence in PayPal.  I won't risk identity theft by handing over even more info for the thieves.  Using Pay Pal isn't worth the risk.  I will leave PayPal if they don't resolve this some other way.

I love it...PayPal has this thread marked as "Solved" without doing anything.  I'm closing my account.  No way I'm giving them my bank account number AND the pin code (which would violate the bank's ToS by the way - you can key it in at a point of sale terminal but you can't give it to a 3rd party and let them store it).  Nor am I signing up for their credit card.

This faxing and or sending your most private personal information to verify yourself is the most ridiculous abusive self detructive request Ive ever had a company ( PAYPAL ) ask me for that I supply money thru. Ive had my account over 15 years!!! If you  don't TRUST me by NOW!!! I just had upteen people LOOK at my SS number, My MILITARY ID , My dL and my utility bills with all my private information on them and my ADDRESS to my home with my birthdate !!!  From the FAXING people I had to PAY to the PAYPAL staff...Have these PEOPLE behind this company ever hear of IDENITY THEFT ... Its a NITEMARE to clean up if it happens to yOU....I asked the woman if the paper work would be shredded after and she told me NO.... and it goes through a whole team of PAYPAL people... Im really angry at Paypal... A few years ago they LOST my money and apologized after 3 years now this... I think they could of got information private through your bank and a notery since they have your credit cards and bank card information through a black out or script lock...I HOPE EBAY goes to another  money pay system now or I will be  using less EBAY...

All of the Wal-Marts in my town have GreenDot MoneyPaks (At the service counters). They are also common at Walgreens and several other chain stores. You can go to the GreenDot site and look where they are sold in your home town.

A note though, the first time you use a GreenDot MoneyPak they ask for some personal information to make sure you are the right person. While trusted and affiliated with PayPal, they are not PayPal and do not deserve the same level of trust.

You'd be better off doing your transaction entirely with PayPal otherwise you'll have to trust a third party with the same information.
