Help regarding a recent gumtree transaction

Hey guys, my first post here. I wanted to ask the legitimacy of this transaction. So I sold a Nintendo Switch via gumtree, the buyer requested to do the transaction through PayPal which I did. I then received an email from PayPal to say the money is on hold because the value is high (£410) and to provide a tracking number for the item so I replied to this email and I got a reply back from PayPal to acknowledge that the tracking number has been updated. Today I checked the Parcel Force tracking number and the buyer has received it but I received an email to say that apparently the buyer has paid £820 instead of £410 and that PayPal won't release my money until I have paid him £410 back. I though whoa there what is going on. He has received the item and my money is still showing as 'pending' on my PayPal homepage. He keeps ringing me to demand I send him £410 back. This is an extract from the second email 'Congratulation!!!Your Order has been dispatched for delivery into your PayPal Account address provided and this will be received in a couple of Hours. But there is a problem about the payment sent to you. Our Accounting Department has made an error with your payment which means a total sum of £820 GBP was sent into your account instead of £410.00 GBP. The deduction of the extra £410.00 GBP has shown in the buyer's account,You are advised to contact the buyer and settle this issue by refunding the £410.00 GBP before the delivery of the full payment into your PayPal account. We regret to inform you that the payment may not get to your PayPal account address until you settle this possible issue with your buyer. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you'. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi @Pharmadude,

Thank you for your post and welcome to the Community Forum!

It does not sound like the message you've posted here was sent by PayPal. I would recommend reviewing this link to make sure that you're not following the advice of a phishing email. Also, please note that if the payment you received on your PayPal account was for £410, and you can see that this amount is showing on your PayPal balance, we would never ask you to issue a refund for a double payment. If you had received a double payment, or if the buyer had sent you a higher amount, you would be able to see it in your PayPal account. If you don't I would recommend not replying to the email received. Please send it to spoof@paypal.com.

If the buyer has a double payment, please tell the buyer to contact us directly, as we would not send you an email requesting to send money to the buyer for a similar issue. For further questions, please contact our Customer Service. If you want to contact our Customer Service, you can click ‘Help & Contact’ at the bottom of any PayPal page to see which options are available. You can also contact us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/PayPal) or on Twitter (@AskPayPal).

I hope this helps,

Martina
