Verifying account without setting up a direct debit

I have asked PayPal a dozen times in emails but I'm always given given the runaround with this fundamental question being ignored and being instructed to setup a direct debit.
With my present bank, I am just not prepared to setup a direct debit. End of.

Hi Siobhan,
I had already had a debit card registered to the account in addition to a bank account.
Because you insist on a direct debit to verify my account, I obliged, and after this was verified I cancelled the direct debit, and under advice removed the bank account leaving just the debit card.
I was incorrrect in what I had said earlier, in that I had been previously used the debit card to pay for purchases through PayPal for a number of years. I therefore can't see the requirement of linking the debit card yet again to the PayPal account.
For me there are no charges associate with my debit card to fund PayPal. If you'd prefer me to use fund direct from the bank account, it may be useful to offer an incentive.
Regards
Mike

Hey Mike, we feel on PayPal that more funding options offer more choice, for us to send money and for you to select a card or bank of your choice. Again, regardless of the account status, we would like all financial information attached to an account to be “Confirmed”.
Once your account was verified with the Direct Debit, you could continue to pay just using a card. I wonder though what error message you received. With a card (Debit or Credit) we request the funds to be given over. It is ultimately up to the card issuer to give us the funds or not.
In relation to the Direct Debit issue and incentives, that is a good point and will pass it on to our Products people. Good Luck.

Ham a newish Ebay seller (115 transactions) and Paypaller and very concerned about the above issues for 3 reasons
1. As a seller I am now being told I won't be able to withdraw money beyond a specified unless I set up a direct debit. This kind of contractual blackmail is an unacceptable business practice and may be illegal under UK law as it is NOT paypal's money!
2. Setting up a direct debit without specifying what payments are to be made either in terms of date or amount leaves you wide open to unauthorised or erroneous debits. This is the principle way in which sophisticated fraudsters rob people's bank accounts so why Paypal are asking us to do something for them that they would warn us against doing for anyone else is a good question.
3. A direct debit offers no increased level of security for buyers - it is simply not a security or identity verification at all.
I suspect the main reason Paypal has introduced this is to de-risk any default on ebay charges or on refunds to buyers following unsatisfactory transactions.....but let's make no mistake, once this DD is set up....THEY CAN TAKE WHAT THEY LIKE WHEN THEY LIKE!!
All in all deeply unsatisfactory and I would be greatful if one of the paypal people who has posted here could clarify just what their legal and contractual basis for witholding funds is.
Meanwhile I think the best way to deal with this is to have a seperate bank account for all your internet transactions and transfer the balance frequently to another account leaving a minimal working balance in the internet transactions.
You know there are still people out there who will tell you the internet is a democracy rather than a tyranny....

hi all
i am too trying to verify my account but can't because i have a joint account, which my hubsand is already using so therefore i can't use it. then i added my saving account as a bank account which got returned and disabled because my bank will not allow direct debits to be use on that account. paypal you need to take a look at making joint accounts accessible to both parnters under different paypal accounts because, i can't buy my parnter anything in serect if i was to add my name to his paypal account. as he would know i what i have brought.

What do you mean by "Piggy Back" - if you are going to do things with your customer's bank accounts I think the process merits a more technical explanation.
Thoinks!
