If someone files an unauthorised use of account it means someone has used their account without their consent eg highjacked paypal account.
The so called buyer can leave you feedback etc until the genuine owner recovers their paypal account.
If paypal rules the account was used without the genuine owners consent then of course they have to have their money back.
HOWEVER if you met ALL the requirements of seller protection you would not lose out either as paypal would reimburse you.
The fact that they have not probably means you did not meet all the criteria of seller protection.

Kudos / Solution appreciated.

An unauthorised payment and an item not received dispute are x2 completely different things.
An unauthorised payment means the persons account has been hijacked and used without their consent, paypal investigate that and can normally see from transaction history etc if that is the case or not.
With an item not received dispute it is easy because you either send it trackable or you don't. If you don't then you lose out.
If yours is 2 years then it is very rare that happens but as long as you meet the criteria for seller protection you would not lose out. I presume you did upload the tracking number on to paypals site when you sent the item? If so then they will have that as a record.

It does not matter how you sold it as you can still add a tracking number to ebay OR paypal OR both.
I enter it in both places so that if there is a problem and i have lost the tracking number then it is safely recorded.
As i said earlier this does not seem to be an item not received dispute it is an unauthorised payment. In other words the account holder is looking at his records and seen a transaction he did not authorise.
That is why you need the tracking number because the hijacker could have had the item sent to a different address.
The "buyer" may not be the paypal account holder who had the unauthorised purchase done via their account.
That is why to safeguard yourself you need to make sure you follow seller protection.
Paypal don't take you to court per se for the funds, they just sell your debt on to a debt collection agency that can turn up at your house or work to try and get the debt cleared.

You are correct in that the person was at fault in maybe getting his account hacked however they still deserve their money back.
The point is that you would not have lost out either if you met the criteria of seller protection.
The fact you did not keep or upload your tracking number on to paypal is your responsibility really, then paypal would have protected you if you had done your bit as well.
I have had an unauthorised dispute before but got refunded as i keep tracking numbers uploaded and paper copies forever.
