EDITING SURNAME DETAILS

Just wondering if anyone can help I set up my PAY PAL years ago as a single parent selling unwanted items and after a number of years of various bank detail changes I stopped using it.I since then got married and obviously My surname changed,which i did quite simpliy through my bank by flashing my marriage cert at them .A couple of months ago I started selling on ebay again and have accumalated some savings into my original account .Forgetting of course my details had changed I now have money sat in paypal going no where because my name is different on bank card ,if i try to change the card details on paypal it wont let me change it to my married name.Have tried calling numerous numbers .finally got through this morning to be told by the operator that i would need to set up another account with a new email address and transfer money from old account to new to retrieve my money ,ok thats fine I did just that and when all was done i was told could not use the bank card as this was already in use by someone else .OFFFF COURSEEEEEEEEEEEE IT ISSSSSSSS ITS MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so frustrated cos all i want to do is get the money transferred ready for my children and myself to go on holiday next week .Any ideas please I have since seperated from husband and will eventually go back to my original maiden name but right now my bank cards are in my married name PLEASE PLEASE Can anyone help ?

Hi there, I am sorry to hear that you are having a hard time getting this sorted out. I appreciate that you walked into your bank and had the name on your account changed without any real hassle. However, PayPal are an on-line agency, and we do not meet our customers face to face. For this reason , and obvious legal reasons, we do need to be stricter in having names changed and finances added that are in different names. I would suggest that you change the name on your original account to your married name, which will allow you to then add your bank and withdraw your funds. Please follow the steps below to do that.

1. Log in to your PayPal account at www.paypal.co.uk
2. Click the 'Help' link at the top of the page.
3. Type 'Change Name' in the search box and click 'Search'.
4. Click on the relevant Help Topic from the list provided.
5. Click on the 'Secure Form' link in the article which will open a new page.
6. Select the option that applies to you then click 'Continue'.
7. Please review the required documents and click 'Upload Files' to upload or 'Continue to Fax Cover Sheet' to fax documents to us (Fax number 08707 303 198).
8. To upload your documentation, click 'Browse'.
9. Select the file you want to attach.
10. Click 'Open'.
11. Click 'Attach this File' and information about your file will appear in the Attachments box.
12. Repeat as many times as required, up to a total file size of 5000kb.
13. Finally, click 'Send Files to PayPal'.

This is PAYPALS most stupid nightmare data problem and I have the same situation.  I set up the paypal account years ago in my former partners name but I have been the person using it for probably six or seven years.  My name is different obviously.  My real name is on my ebay account, my real name is on my bank account and my credit card but I am stuck with someone else's name on my paypal account and I have money sitting in it which I cannot get out because the system insists on paying a bank account name that no longer exists even though every transaction on the paypal account has been done by me and money for purchases always comes from my bank account or credit card - both of which are in my name.

Paypal's solution is to open another paypal account but there is no way I am going through all the rigmarole of getting that new account verified.  

PAYPAL need to sort this genuine user issue out once and for all.  I dont see any solution to it.  Good luck  Brian

Hi there brianfearn,

As we are a financial institution we are not able to change the name on an account other then when the name is legally changed or for a typographical error.

It's very similar to a high street bank, if they were approached to change the name of an account to another persons the bank would explain it's not possible.

I know setting up an account is not ideal for you but in this case it is the best way forward.

To sign up for a Personal or Premier account, follow the steps below:

1. Visit the PayPal website at www.paypal.co.uk
2. Click the yellow ‘Sign Up’ button on the left side of the page.
3. Select your country or region from the drop down menu.
4. Select your preferred account type and click ‘Get Started’.
5. Enter your information, including your email address and password, which you will need to log in to your PayPal account:
• Enter your full email address, for example, name@domain.com
• Your password must be at least 8 characters with no accented characters and is case-sensitive
6. Once you have completed the form and read the relevant agreements click ‘Agree and Create Account’.

Dear Wayne,

Thank you for telling me that I should set up a new Paypal account.  however I cannot do this because the account that is in the wrong name has my email address as its entry point and I cant use an existing email address to set up a new account.  that email address is also my Ebay account address.  this my email address is my real name, my HSBC bank account is my real name but the Paypal account is in another name.  When I try to transfer my funds out of my Paypal account I cant send them to my real named HSBC bank account.  Your solution does not work.

I sent details of a name change to Paypal and they have duly changed the name on my Paypal account.

However the main motivation for doing this was to transfer a refund back into my bank account.  Yes they changed the name on the account but that didn't automatically change the name on my listed bank account!  I tried to delete it and start again but that wasn't allowed so I tried to add a new account (which was the same account number etc except I had changed the name on it) this wasn't allowed either because according to Paypal that account was already listed. (Of course it was but I need to change the name on it!). Please help!

Hi Wayne, i am having the same problem and i ama little stuck on what to do next. i went to the 'help' section and got the link from the virtualy chat tp upload the proof of name change, which i did witha copy of my passport, but once i had done this tehr was no other option of what i wanted to change my name too etc. please can you help as igot married so my surname has changed and really need the money out of the paypal account asap.

Hi there Oskiecat,

When a customer has updated the name that is registered on their PayPal account, this doesn't update the name that is registered with the bank account associated with the PayPal account.

What you would need to do is to remove your bank account from your PayPal account by going through the 'Profile' on your PayPal account. Once you have done this, you can then register your bank account again to your PayPal account in the correct name. Then you would be able to withdraw funds from your PayPal account to your bank account and you can also complete the process in order to verify your bank account with us.

People tring to deal with this really do have my sympathy. It`s made out to be so easy to do the Surname change when in fact it`s not easy at all, it`s nothing short of frustrating!!

I received an email advising me to do the 'remove bank account and add another with your change of surname', only to be blocked from doing so because apparently there`s a current transaction in progress and the bank details will be duplicated if I try to add the bank account in my married name  WTF?? , erm.....no the transaction is completed and the due funds have already been withdrawn from  my bank account, therefore I don`t understand why I can`t remove the account, I`ve been trying for 3 days???? 

I followed all the instructions given, I uploaded all the proof required to change from my Maiden name to my Married name yet Paypal are still making things difficult :o/
