MARK THOMP

I had some germ using the MARK THOMP name yesterday first asking me via text with no number just ip1 as a name if my case was still for sale and he was a sailor and buying the car for his son in the northern territory. Apparently his son graduated top of his class and the car was a a surprise gift. He said he was already looking for couriers and that he didn't have a phone only Internet access and he wanted my paypal account or my bsb and bank account details and the name on the account. Sounds very similar to some of the others i read. It sounded i but dodgy to me so i said send me your paypal and I'll request payment from you and he didn't reply for approx 8 hours. At that point he said good news the money is ready to be transferred i just need your bsb and account numbers. I told him i was happy for him to but it from ebay and use his paypal that way. Again went quiet. It felt like a scam at that point so i pointed out to him if he really was at sea using Internet then the Internet would be using the same network as a phone would use so that was a lie and he could buy it from eBay if he was keen. I also finished off by saying if his son actually graduated top of his class then tell him he didn't get his intelligence from you because your a dumb s#$t. It all seemed to elaborate from the start and in the end i looked on google today and find same stories. Im not sure but if they get your email address its usually your paypal account id and they may be able to access some verification with accounts. Or they may be able to debit your account as a fake business. I don't really know what they are capable of but it's just another low life scam affecting unsuspecting people.

YEP THIS IS A TYPICAL PAYPAL SCAM.

They encourage you to use paypal.
You will get/got a "fake" email that looks as though it is from paypal.....it isn't.

It will say the buyer has paid ...you won't have been paid.

If the item requires shipping they will tell you that they will pay you extra and you must pay the agent via western union / moneygram BEFORE the funds are released to you.

They are not interested in the item, they just want the western union etc funds and you will never see money in your paypal balance.

They also threaten legal action...have a laugh at that one and ignore it as its rubbish.

Paypal NEVER tell you to send an item before the payment is showing in your paypal account.

Paypal NEVER expect you to use a rival money transfer service.

Delete any emails and ignore the scammers.

Remember anyway that there is no seller protection on paypal for motor vehicles.

Looks like Mark Thomp's son has birthdays over a year apart. It was not uncommon for the "father" of a child to be duly registered after being at sea for 14 months, so it looks like being a sailor is possible <grin?. I suspect his father was a sailor too.

Here is what we got from a  Gumtree ad in Australia

Hello

I am buying this for my first son who graduated ,I want it to be the perfect graduation gift for him and am making it a surprise package ,Does it have any history I should be aware of? and why are you selling if you don't mind my asking. I don't mind adding an extra $300.00 for you just to take down the ads. I am already in talks with freighters that will handle the pickup and delivery .I will really appreciate if you can email more info

i am very busy  working all day, i  am a sailor am presently on-board, i don't have access to my bank account online as am not with my credit card details here but i have my bank account link up with my PayPal account so I will be paying you through PayPal to your nominated bank account or better still is if you have aPayPalaccount ,please get back to me with your BSB and account details or PayPalaccount so i can proceed with the payment and contact the courier agent who will come to pick it up and deliver it in NT for my son.

Funny thing that.

He SMS'd me today about a bike I have on Gumtree.

I used a rarely accessed email addy and challenged his weird phone number.

He used exactly the same text as yours when he replied.

Complete time waster.  He thinks we don't do any Google searches.  Smiley Mad

Looks like they're doing the rounds again...just got one of these this afternoon!!!

We received a text from a USA number asking if the motorbike was still for sale.  As we currently have two up for sale, I replied to his questions via his email, asking which bike?

His reply this evening is as follows:

Hi Folks, I listed a car for sale on Gumtree Australia this afternoon, a few hours later I got a text from someone using the name "Booksy" the message read:

"Hello, I am enquiring about the vehicle listed for my son. Kindly get back to me with details on my personal email only on mthmpsatoutlook.com"

I sent a reply which did not get delivered suprise suprise.

I did not go as far as others as this sounded iffy to me from the off so I googled the address and found loads warning of this scammer with different names just same theme of something for his brilliant son so he will not be getting an email unless he bothers me again and I leave it to your imagination what my reply might include.

Listed a car for sale on Gumtree a few weeks ago and received a strange text asking to email further information then the below email. Glad this forum was here so I didn’t waste any time dealing with him! “The price is a good buy for me... please remove the advert and consider it sold as i am paying your full asking price, i have done thorough check on the advert and i'm fine with it,sadly i would not be able to come personally to view or collect it due to house bound went through throat cancer surgery and couldn't talk more but will be ok soon but i have an agent that would help me to pick it up at your preferred location after you have received your money and i'll pay you via PayPal and pick up will start after you have cash your money ..if that is ok with you. Where is the pick up location so that i can inform the agent about it now and send me your registered paypal email and name,so i can make arrangement for payment. I can also transfer from my paypal to your bank account. Kindly get back to me with your BSB number Account number and Account name . Regards, Mark”
