That is a good question.  Come on PayPal.!!  They act as if they have never heard of this problem.  How about this - just fix the issue.  I don't like being asked to install anything while I am on a secure site.

BTW my issue started just a couple days ago too.  Exact same message.

I had the site ask me to install Quicktime plugin, which I installed. Then it asked me to install Windows Media Player plugin. Which I again installed, the whole time wondering why it needed either.

So I called PayPal and they told me that a number of customers are having this issue and that they believe it is an internet explorer issue, not an issue with the paypal site.

The best I can make of it is that IE for some reason thinks the paypal site needs these plugins. Why? Who knows. In hindsight I wish I didn't install the plugins, I simply trusted that they were needed... well okay I was a tad suspicious of why they were needed, but thought they must be needed if I am being asked. OOOPS

Hope that helps.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your patience.  I just wanted to pop in and let everyone know we're still investigating the issue. For now, I don't recommend installing plugins from that browser alert on the PayPal website until we know more.  Quicktime and Windows Media player are not required to use PayPal so this issue won't affect your ability to send or receive payments.

I'll post here again as soon as I have more information.

That's pretty strange.  As we can see... Paypal has a problem.... and it may  be developing into a serious problem that could cost them many members if this problem spreads and as news of the problem  spreads.   People may leave Paypal.. as I am giving thought to do....  and other people and businesses that may have had thoughts of joining may decide not to join.

That's sad... because Paypal has the potential to be an excellent service...and I believed it was indeed an excellent service.

All I can say is that they better get to work on this in a serious way and solve the problem....  people don't want to wait forever for a solution, and we don't want to log in someday and only to find that our accounts have been wiped out because of a possible security breach that was allowed to remain and fester.

Even as I logged in to reply to this I was prompted by the popup.  So frustrating that a company as large and seemingly efficient can't get a handle on this....

Have they tried?  I am contemplating putting Paypal on the back burner and going back to the old reliable money order!

Fyi: the popup thing is getting worse. It used to be that it would happen after I first logged in (but never before I logged in) and I could tell it no and it would go away till the next time I logged in. Its now asking me to install the popup on every page. Hope that helps. Definetly only in IE and I've not gotten the popup request on any other website.

Hi everyone,

I've confirmed that this is not a security issue but a coding issue on PayPal's end affecting Internet Explorer.

With that said, it's still important to avoid clicking links in emails and manually type in paypal.com into your browser when visiting the site as a good security practice.

Most modern browsers will also let you know if you are visiting the real PayPal site:

For example, Firefox will display a green bar:

firefox.PNG

Instructions for updating to the latest version of your browser can be found here:

Safer Browser

The fix is coming soon.  I know it's annoying to be prompted to run a plugin/extension every time you visit PayPal.  This issue will not affect any of the normal functionality of the PayPal website.  Payment processing will still work as normal.

Thanks for your patience. 🙂
